What is actually going on
The SMD line is often installed in a cabinet on a switched spur, so on the models listed in the table on this page a dark display is very often a switch that was turned off during other work rather than an appliance fault.
What you are seeing
- The door does not click when closed — No click means no latch confirmation.
- The display is completely dark — No clock, no light, no response. That is a supply question before it is an appliance question. On the models listed in the table on this page the access for this is the same across the line.
- The display lights but the start button does nothing — Lights without action is an interlock rather than a failure.
- The breaker trips when the oven is plugged in — That is an electrical fault and it belongs on the safety page. Stop and do not reset repeatedly.
- The oven beeps and cancels the programme — A condition has been checked and failed, usually the door.
- NEAR MISS — a demo or shop mode is enabled — Display models are sometimes sold with a demo mode set, which lights the panel and inhibits cooking.
- NEAR MISS — a timer or delay function is running — Check for a timer before diagnosing anything.
What is most likely, and why
- A blown internal fuse — Top of the list here. Not owner work: the fuse is behind the case with the stored charge. This is where the SMD line differs from the brand’s other lines.
- A dropped door or worn hinge — Second on this list. The latch pins have to line up with their switches. A door that has settled even slightly stops the oven.
- A control board fault — Next after those two. Rare, and usually uneconomic on a countertop oven. The SMD line behaves the same way here from one model to the next.
- A damaged plug, lead or socket — Fourth in the ranking. A damaged flex is a stop signal rather than a repair to work around.
- The door latch not confirming — Fifth, and uncommon. The latch is a consumable and it fails to a stop, which is the safe direction.
The diagnostic order
- Try a simple one-minute programme — Use the shortest programme as a test.
- Inspect the plug and the lead — Check the whole supply path visually. That holds for every model the table on this page lists.
- Find and check the spur switch on a built-in oven — Usually in the cabinet beside the oven or just above the worktop.
- Unplug for a few minutes and retry — Power down fully, wait, then try a short programme.
- Test the socket with another appliance — Prove the socket first; it is the commonest cause of a dark display.
What to do before any panel comes off
Safety
The rule on this appliance is absolute: unplug it, and leave the case closed. A microwave oven stores a high charge in its capacitor after the power is off, and nothing behind the case is an owner repair at any point, for any fault.
