A DW line dishwasher with a lit panel that refuses to run is reporting a condition — the door, the tap or a control lock — and on these models each of those is checkable without tools in a couple of minutes.
What this looks like in the kitchen
- The buttons do not respond at all — Look for a padlock symbol before assuming electronics.
- The panel is completely dark — Total silence points at the spur, the socket or the breaker. On the DW line this is the part that is reachable first.
- The machine beeps and stops — A beep at start-up is the machine reporting rather than breaking.
- The cycle starts and stops within seconds — Usually the fill: no water arriving means no cycle.
- The breaker trips when the machine is switched on — An electrical fault in the appliance or an overloaded circuit. Stop and investigate rather than resetting repeatedly.
- NEAR MISS — the cycle runs but leaves the load dirty — A running machine is not a no-start fault.
- NEAR MISS — the door was left slightly ajar — Close the door fully and see whether the programme picks up.
Causes, most likely first
- A damp or failed touch panel — The one to check first. A panel that works intermittently after a hot cycle is usually damp rather than dead. On the models listed in the table on this page this is the check that decides the job.
- A blocked inlet filter or a failed fill valve — Second on this list. A machine that cannot fill aborts within seconds of starting, which owners read as a refusal to start.
- A closed or frozen supply tap — Third in the order. The control will not begin a programme it cannot fill, and a closed tap looks identical to a failed valve from the front. What separates the DW line here is the order, not the parts.
- A control lock engaged — Further down. A locked panel refuses every input and survives a power cycle. It is the cheapest cause here.
- The door latch not confirming — Fifth, and uncommon. First by a wide margin. The latch microswitch tells the control the door is shut, and a worn catch never does.
The order to check in
- Find and check the spur switch — It is usually in the cabinet beside the machine or above the worktop. Switching it on solves a surprising number of these.
- Switch off at the spur for a few minutes and retry — A hard reset clears a control that has latched an error. It is one of the few places the models listed in the table on this page genuinely diverge.
- Look for a control lock symbol — A small key or padlock on the display. Holding two buttons usually clears it.
- Check the breaker and any RCD — Switch it fully off and back on rather than nudging it, then watch whether it holds.

Isolate the machine at the spur and close the tap under the sink before anything comes apart. Bail the sump with a jug and wear gloves: broken glass in that water is the most common injury on this appliance.
