On the DW line poor cleaning is a filter-stack question before it is anything else, because this platform stacks the coarse filter, the fine mesh and the pump inlet in one column under the lower arm — one obstruction affects all three. On the models listed in the table on this page that column lifts out by hand, which is why the owner-side checks here go further than the generic page allows.
What the owner actually sees
- The spray arms do not turn freely — Spin each one by hand: resistance means debris at the bearing or an item catching it.
- Baked-on food survives every programme — A short or eco programme with no pre-rinse will not remove baked deposits, and neither will a machine filling with cold water. On the models listed in the table on this page the access for this is the same across the line.
- A white film on glassware — Hard water and rinse aid rather than a machine fault. It wipes off with a vinegar rinse and comes back without one.
- The detergent tablet is still in the dispenser at the end — The dispenser flap has been blocked by a tall item, so the tablet never entered the wash at all.
- A smell of stale food from the tub — Odour and grit arrive together and have the same cure.
- NEAR MISS — water is standing in the sump at the end — A drainage fault. Dirty water that cannot leave is pumped back over the next load, but the fault to fix is the drain.
- NEAR MISS — the tub is dry and the load untouched — That is a fill fault, not a cleaning fault. The machine never got water.
What is most likely, and why
- Tablets on a programme too short to dissolve them — Top of the list here. Match the detergent format to the programme length; powder suits short cycles better. On these models the panel comes away before anything else does.
- A cold or slow fill — Then this. Machines that take a cold feed rely on their own heater; if that is weak the wash never reaches temperature and grease is not removed.
- A lower arm bearing full of grit — Then this one. The arm turns slowly rather than not at all, so half the tub gets a weaker sweep than it should. The DW line behaves the same way here from one model to the next.
- A heating element or thermostat fault — Fourth, and getting rarer. The element is diagnosed by touch and by the drying result, and replacing it is not owner work.
- Old, damp or wrong detergent — Rarer again. Detergent that has been open for a year in a damp cupboard is a common and invisible cause.
Working through it in order
- Match the detergent to the programme — One changed variable per cycle, and write the result down.
- Pull the filter stack and look at what is in it — The debris is the diagnosis. A packed fine mesh explains the whole complaint. What separates the DW line here is the order, not the parts.
- Spin both spray arms by hand — Each should turn freely with a fingertip. Resistance is debris at the bearing.
- Check the dispenser flap opens freely — Close the door on an empty machine and confirm nothing blocks the flap’s swing.
