The short answer
The pump filter is the one repair on a washing machine that can be done without knowing anything about the machine. Every front-loader has one, it is behind the small access panel at the bottom front, and it is the leading cause of a drum that will not empty - which makes it the right first move whatever your model turns out to be.
What you observe
- The drum is full and the pump strains — A blockage - the filter is first.
- Nothing is heard at the drain step — A dead pump, a thermal cut-out or a control fault.
- Draining is slow and clothes come out soaked — A partial restriction rather than a complete block.
- The drum is empty but the load is soaking — It drained and skipped the spin - balance, not drainage.
- NEAR MISS - water on the floor as well — That is a leak; the water-leak page covers it.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- Blocked pump filter — First on any machine, and the only cause here an owner can both confirm and fix.
- Kinked or crushed drain hose — Second, and common after a machine has been pushed back into place.
- Blocked outlet or standpipe — Third, and identified by a sink nearby draining slowly too.
- Obstructed pump impeller — Fourth, and usually found alongside a loaded filter.
- Failed drain pump — Last, and identified by silence rather than straining.
Check in this order, and why
- Open the lower access panel and clean the pump filter — First, unplugged, with a tray and towels ready.
- Listen at the drain step for straining or silence — Second, because the two point at different repairs entirely.
- Follow the drain hose for kinks and crushing — Third, and free to correct.
- Run water into any sink sharing the outlet — Fourth. A slow sink means the problem is downstream of the machine.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the machine before opening the pump filter, and have towels ready: the drum may still be full and the water can be hot. Close both taps before disturbing a hose. Never tip the machine to empty it, because water reaches the electrics before it reaches the floor.
When to call a technician
Call when the filter is clean, the hose is clear and the pump is still silent at the drain step. Call also if the filter housing will not release - forcing it cracks the housing, and a cracked housing then leaks on every cycle.
