The short answer

What you observe
- Foam and water at the front during the fill — The detergent drawer overflowing - dose or a blocked siphon.

Causes, most likely first on this family
- Detergent drawer overflowing — First on the large-capacity codes, because dose is judged by drum size and the drawer is not.
- Torn or perished door boot — Second, and the leading mechanical leak on any front-loader.
- Pump filter cap not seated — Third, and very common shortly after someone has cleaned the filter.
- Supply hose connection weeping — Fourth, and the only leak that runs with the machine switched off.
- Sump hose or pump housing — Last, and the one that needs a panel off to confirm.
Check in this order, and why
- Watch one fill with the drawer in view — First, because an overflow at the drawer is unmistakable once you are looking at it.
- Pull the drawer right out and clear the siphon and housing — Second. Residue in the siphon cap is the usual reason a drawer overflows.
- Open the door boot at its lowest fold and look inside — Third. Grit, coins and a tear are visible without tools.
- Check the filter cap is fully seated and its seal clean — Fourth, especially if the filter was recently cleaned.

Unplug the machine before removing any panel, and close both taps before disturbing a hose. Mop first: water and a live appliance on a hard floor is a shock risk. Never run the machine with a panel removed to find a leak, and replace rather than re-use a supply hose whose fitting has cracked.

When to call a technician
