What you are seeing
- A metallic tinkle during the wash — Small metallic sounds mean small metallic objects; find them before they cut something.
- A hum with no drum movement — Power reaching the motor with something stopping the drum — a jam, a belt off its pulley, or a capacitor fault. Owners of the models listed in the table on this page describe this in almost identical words.
- A heavy knocking that walks the machine across the floor — Hammering at spin-up with movement is a balance and levelling problem.
- A scraping from inside the drum — Anything metallic through a drum hole makes this sound and will damage clothes before it damages the machine.

Causes, most likely first

The diagnostic order
- Run a spin with a small even load — An easy load is the definitive balance test.
- Check the machine is level and does not rock — Press each corner in turn; any movement means the feet need adjusting. On the BFLB line this is the part that is reachable first.
- Run an empty drum on a spin-only programme — An empty spin is the cleanest mechanical test available.
- Empty the drum and turn it by hand — Spin the empty drum by hand and listen with an ear to the cabinet.
What to do before any panel comes off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker, then shut the water off. Never run a cycle with a panel removed, and leave the door lock exactly as it is: it keeps the drum shut while it spins and that is its whole purpose.
