On the Beko BDBU dishwasher line, if the machine has just been installed or the sink waste has just been worked on, start there. A new disposal unit with its knockout plug still in place stops drainage completely and is missed every time. What changes against the brand-generic answer is the order of the checks, not the list of causes.
Signs and near misses on a BDBU unit
- Standing water in the bottom of the tub at the end of the cycle — The defining symptom. A small amount in the sump well is normal on some designs; a pool over the filter is not. On these BDBU models it is the observation that decides the order.
- Water comes back into the tub after it has drained — A siphon problem: the drain hose is not looped high enough and waste water is returning.
- The problem started immediately after a new sink or disposal unit was fitted — The knockout plug in a new disposal inlet is the classic cause and it stops drainage dead.
- NEAR MISS: the machine will not begin a cycle at all — That is a start fault, covered separately.
Ranked causes on the BDBU line
- A filter and sump packed with food debris — Ranked first, and it is the most common cause of every complaint this appliance produces. Debris that gets past a neglected filter settles in the sump, right where the drain path starts. This holds its place across the BDBU models listed below.
- A disposal unit knockout plug still in place — Second, and the one that catches people out after a kitchen fitting. The connection looks perfect and the path is completely closed.
- A control or timer fault that never calls for the drain phase — Last, and rare. It usually shows itself in other cycle behaviour as well.
Check in this order, and why
- Listen during the drain phase — Audible and straining means a blockage; silent means the pump or the control. This single observation splits the list in half. The BDBU layout is the reason it comes first here.
- Fill the sink and watch it drain — A slow sink means the blockage is in the household waste and not in the appliance.
- Look at whether the dishes are also dirty — Baked-on food alongside standing water confirms the machine has been washing in water it should have dumped.

When this becomes a service call
