The answer first
A dishwasher cleans by throwing hot water at things. When it stops cleaning, work through the three things that throwing needs: enough water, hot enough water, and spray arms that can turn freely and are not blocked. On the BD line specifically, the platform's layout is what decides which of those gets checked first.
Signs and near misses on a BD unit
- Food baked back on rather than left behind — Dirty water being reused, which is drainage rather than washing. On the BD line this is where the checking starts.
- Cloudy glasses that do not wipe clean — Etching, which is permanent and is caused by soft water and over-dosing rather than by a fault.
- The cycle seems much shorter than it used to be — A machine that is not reaching temperature may be cutting a heat phase short.
- NEAR MISS: the machine will not start its cycle at all — A different fault entirely, covered on the will-not-start page.
The ranking on the BD line
- A filter packed with food debris — Ranked first and it is not close. The filter is the one part of this appliance the owner is expected to clean, and it is the one part almost nobody does until the results go wrong. On a BD unit this is still the first thing to eliminate.
- Incoming water that is not hot enough — Detergent needs heat to work. A long cold pipe run, or a heating element that has failed, both show as poor cleaning and a wet load.
- Overloading and shadowing — A genuine cause rather than an excuse: water travels in straight lines, and anything nesting behind a big platter stays dirty however good the machine is.
- A failed circulation pump or wash motor — Last, and deliberately: it is the least common and the only one that is not owner work. It is diagnosed by elimination, not by guess.
What to check first, second, third
- Pull the filter out and look at it — It takes seconds, needs no tool on most machines, and it is the single highest-yield check on the whole list. The BD layout is the reason it comes first here.
- Spin both spray arms by hand — They should turn freely with a light push. Resistance or a stop is the fault, right there.
- Run the kitchen tap hot before starting a cycle — If results improve, the machine was starting on a tubful of cold pipe water and the fix is free.
What to do before you start
Safety
Unplug the dishwasher or switch off its breaker before removing a panel or reaching into the sump — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is gone. Broken glass hides in the filter well and in the sump; go in with a torch and a cloth rather than bare fingers.

When to stop and call
Call once the filter, the arms, the jets, the water temperature and the loading are all eliminated and the results are still poor. What is left is the heater or the circulation pump, and both are tested electrically. Call sooner if the machine is also leaving standing water.
