The short answer
If the BDBU line is leaving food on the dishes, start with what is spinning and what is filtering, not with what is in the dispenser. A machine with a blocked arm and a loaded filter will fail with any detergent, and a machine with a clear path will clean well with almost any of them. Because only one model number carries the BDBU name, nothing below needs a variant caveat.

Causes, most likely first on the BDBU line
- Blocked or obstructed spray arms — The leading cause on this platform. This ranks first because it is visible, free, and accounts for more poor-cleaning complaints than every other cause combined.
- Fouled filter recirculating soil — Close behind it. A dishwasher washes with the same water for most of the cycle, so the filter is what keeps that water usable; once it is blinded, the machine paints soil back onto the load.
- Wash water not reaching temperature — Third in order, and the one most often missed. A long run of pipe between the water heater and the kitchen means the first fill is cold, and short cycles never recover from it.
Check in this order, and why
- Take both arms out and hold them up to the light — Every jet should show daylight. Clear the blocked ones with a pin, then refit and spin each arm by hand to confirm a full free turn.
- Remove the filter and look at the sump beneath — If the mesh is greasy rather than merely dirty, wash it in hot water with detergent — rinsing under a cold tap does not clear fat.
- Run the hot tap at the sink before starting a cycle — Run it until it is properly hot, then start the machine. If cleaning improves on that cycle alone, the problem is the first fill, not the appliance.

Switch the machine off at its breaker before a panel comes off or a hand goes into the sump — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut the supply valve under the sink before disturbing a fitting, and never wedge the door interlock to watch a wash run.

When to call a technician
If the arms are clear, the filter is clean, the load is sensible and the fill is hot and deep, the remaining causes are a weak circulation pump or a failed heater, and both need testing with the machine powered and open. That is a service call. Until then, changing detergent is the cheapest experiment and it is worth one cycle of your time, not three.
