The short answer
For a BD unit: before anything is dismantled, find out whether the pump runs at all. A drain phase you can hear working against a blockage is a very different fault from one that is silent. That is the same list the brand-generic page carries, in a different order.
What this looks like on a BD unit
- The drain phase is silent — That points at the pump, its motor or the control, and it is the branch that ends in a service call. Read this one against the BD models listed below.
- The sink backs up when the dishwasher drains — A shared waste that is partly blocked, and the dishwasher is the innocent party.
- Dishes are dirty as well, with food baked back on — The consequence of washing in water that never left, which is why drainage is checked before cleaning complaints.
- NEAR MISS: water is on the floor rather than in the tub — That is a leak and it belongs on the leak page.
What it usually turns out to be on the BD line
- A filter and sump packed with food debris — Ranked first, and it is the most common cause of every complaint this appliance produces. Debris that gets past a neglected filter settles in the sump, right where the drain path starts. The BD build does not move this one: its rank is the same here as on the brand-generic page.
- Broken glass or a foreign object jamming the pump impeller — Distinctive, because the drain phase is usually audible and strained rather than silent.
- A failed drain pump or its motor — It belongs here rather than at the top: a silent drain phase points at it, and everything above is eliminated first because everything above is free.
- A control or timer fault that never calls for the drain phase — Last, and rare. It usually shows itself in other cycle behaviour as well.
The order that narrows it
- Reach into the sump with a torch and a gloved hand — Glass, labels, olive stones and bones are all found here, and any of them will close the path. The BD layout is the reason it comes first here.
- Check the waste connection under the sink — Especially if anything has been fitted recently; a knockout plug is the classic find.
- Fill the sink and watch it drain — A slow sink means the blockage is in the household waste and not in the appliance.
- Look at whether the dishes are also dirty — Baked-on food alongside standing water confirms the machine has been washing in water it should have dumped.
Before you open anything
Safety
Isolate the appliance before any panel or hose comes off, and put towels down before you disconnect anything. A drain hose holds water along its whole length and will empty onto the floor the moment it is freed.
