The short answer
A panel-ready Beko and Blomberg built-in that runs without cooling is most often being suffocated by its own housing: a blocked plinth grille, a sealed rear channel, or a heavy custom door pulling the seal open. Those three are owner-checkable. A stalled defrost is next, and the sealed system is last.
What you observe
- The cabinet is warm while the unit runs constantly — It never satisfies, so it never cycles off.
- The kitchen plinth area is noticeably warm — Rejected heat is being recirculated instead of carried away.
- The freezer is cold but the refrigerator section is not — Air is not moving between compartments, which points at ice on the evaporator.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is silent and dark inside — No compressor and no light is a power fault, not a cooling failure.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- A blocked plinth grille or rear ventilation channel — First on a built-in, and a cause that does not exist on a freestanding unit. Without that airflow the condenser cannot reject heat, and the compressor runs continuously while the cabinet slowly warms.
- A heavy custom door panel pulling the seal open — Second: a solid timber or stone-faced front is far heavier than the appliance door it is bolted to. Over time the hinges settle, the door hangs low, and the gasket lifts along the top edge where nobody looks.
- Ice over the evaporator after a stalled defrost — Third, and it produces the distinctive split symptom: a cold freezer with a warm refrigerator section, because the fan can no longer push air across an iced coil.
- A sealed-system or compressor fault — Last, and the only cause that is not owner work. On a built-in it is also the most disruptive to repair, which is another reason to eliminate the three above first.
Check in this order, and why
- Pull the plinth grille and check the airflow path — It is the leading cause on this platform and takes a minute.
- Close the door on a sheet of paper at the top corners — A heavy panel lifts the seal there first; the paper will slide out freely.
- Compare freezer and refrigerator temperatures — A cold freezer with a warm fridge names the iced evaporator.
- Only then treat it as a sealed-system fault — That needs gauges and the unit drawn out of the cabinet.
What an owner can safely check
- Move perishables to a cooler — A refrigerator holds food safely at forty Fahrenheit, four Celsius, or below.
Tools: cooler, iceAbout 20 min
- Remove and vacuum the plinth grille — Clear the mesh, then check nothing behind it is obstructing the condenser.
Tools: vacuum, soft brushAbout 20 min
- Check the rear channel is open at the top — Installers sometimes seal the top vent during a worktop fit, which closes the path.
Tools: torchAbout 20 min
- Test the door seal all the way round with paper — Pay attention to the top edge and the hinge side.
Tools: paperAbout 15 min
- Empty the cabinet and let it stand switched off for a full defrost — If cooling returns afterwards, the defrost system is the cause.

Safety
Switch off at the breaker or unplug before removing the plinth grille or any interior panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not pull a built-in cabinet out of its opening on your own: with a custom door fitted it is front-heavy and unstable. Never chip ice from an evaporator, and never seal or extend the ventilation channel with anything that narrows it.
When to call a technician
Call when the grille and channel are clear, the door seals all the way round, a full defrost restored nothing, and the cabinet still will not hold temperature. Call sooner if the condenser stays cold while the compressor runs, because a condenser that never warms points at the sealed system rather than anything you can reach. Door-panel realignment on a built-in is also installer work rather than owner work.
