The short answer
A Bangson compact refrigerator that runs but does not cool is usually iced over at its cold plate, badly sealed at the door, or boxed into a space that will not let it shed heat. Those three account for most cases and all are owner-checkable. A sealed-system fault is real but it is the least likely and the only one that is not your work.
What you observe
- The cabinet is cool but not cold — Drinks are drinkable rather than chilled, and the cabinet never feels genuinely cold.
- The compressor runs constantly without cycling off — It cannot reach the dial setting, so it never stops trying.
- A thick ice slab on the cold plate or the small freezer box — Far more than the light frost the design expects.
- NEAR MISS — nothing runs and no light comes on — That is a power fault rather than a cooling fault.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- Ice built up over the cold plate or freezer box — First on a manual-defrost compact: the plate is the cooling surface, and a slab of ice across it is insulation. The ice grows until the fridge section cannot keep up.
- A door that is not sealing — Second, and unusually common on this platform because the doors are reversible: after a hinge swap the door often sits slightly proud, and a compact door has a light magnetic gasket with little margin. Warm humid air enters continuously and feeds the ice above.
- No clearance to shed heat — Third: these cabinets get built into desks, cupboards and shelving units. With no condenser fan, a boxed-in cabinet cannot reject heat, so the compressor runs endlessly and still loses ground on a warm day.
- A thermostat or sealed-system fault — Last. The dial gets knocked to a low setting far more often than the thermostat fails, and a genuine sealed-system fault on a cabinet this size is both rare and the only cause that needs a licensed technician.
Check in this order, and why
- Look at the cold plate and freezer box for ice — It is both the likeliest cause and visible without tools.
- Close the door on a sheet of paper at several points — Where it pulls out freely, the gasket is not holding.
- Feel the cabinet sides and check the clearance — Hot sides in a recess explain a cabinet that runs forever and never wins.
- Check the dial, then stop — If the plate, door, clearance and dial are all right, the remaining causes need gauges.
What an owner can safely check
- Move perishable food to a cooler with ice — A refrigerator holds food safely at forty Fahrenheit, four Celsius, or below, and this one is not doing that.
Tools: cooler, iceAbout 20 min
- Defrost the cabinet completely — Unplug it and leave the door open until the plate is bare. Never chip at the ice.
Tools: towelsAbout 90 min
- Clean and check the door gasket — Wipe it, warm it with your hands if it is deformed, and confirm it seats all the way round.
Tools: warm water, clothAbout 20 min
- Give the cabinet clearance on all sides — Pull it out of the recess and leave the manufacturer's gap at the back.
About 15 min
- Set the dial mid-range and leave it a day — Judge it only after a full day with the door kept shut.

Safety
Unplug the refrigerator before defrosting it or working behind it — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip or lever ice off a cold plate: the evaporator tubing is bonded into or behind it, and one puncture ends the cabinet. Do not run a compact refrigerator sealed inside cabinetry without the ventilation opening the manufacturer specifies.
When to call a technician
Call when the cabinet is fully defrosted, the door seals along its whole edge, the unit has clear space around it, the dial is mid-range, and a day later it still will not get cold. Call sooner if the compressor is running and the condenser at the back stays cold to the touch, because a condenser that never warms up while the compressor runs points at the sealed system rather than at anything on your list.

This page is written for Bangson compact refrigerators as a class, not for one model line. Deliberately not here, because it differs by family: thermostat ranges, refrigerant charge figures, clearance dimensions and part identifiers, all of which belong on the page for your specific family or model.
