A dryer that takes longer and longer to dry a load, and then stops heating altogether, has been telling you about its vent for months. That ordering is what Bangson owners should work through before anyone is called.
Signs and near misses
- The drum turns normally but the air stays cold — The heat source has been cut; the motor is unaffected.
- Loads have been taking longer for weeks or months — The classic slow slide of a vent filling with lint, and it usually precedes the no-heat call.
- A burning or scorched smell — Stop immediately and leave the appliance off. Lint is the fuel and this is the point at which that matters.
- NEAR MISS: it is loud as well as cold — Check the noise page too; a seized blower produces both.
Causes, most likely first on a Bangson dryer
- A blocked lint filter — Ranked first because it is free, instant, and the most common restriction of all. A filter that looks clear can be sealed by fabric-softener film that water beads on rather than passes through. On a Bangson dryer that sequence is what saves the wasted visit.
- An opened thermal fuse or cut-out — Usually a consequence rather than a cause: it opened because airflow was restricted, and replacing it without clearing the duct simply repeats the fault.
- A failed thermostat or control — Last, and diagnosed by elimination after the airflow path has been proven clear.
The checking order
- Pull the lint filter and hold it under a running tap — Water that beads and sits on the mesh rather than running straight through means it is sealed with softener film.
- Check the gas tap behind a gas dryer is fully open — Especially after any other work in the room.
- Feel whether the room gets hot while the dryer runs — Heat staying in the room is heat not leaving through the duct.
Steps you can do yourself
- Clean the lint filter and wash it in hot soapy water — Softener film is invisible and seals the mesh. Dry it fully before refitting.

- Pull the dryer out and disconnect the duct at the back — Check the duct is not crushed flat behind the appliance, which is the commonest single restriction.

- Clean the duct along its whole run — A brush kit or a vacuum from both ends. Expect far more lint than seems plausible.

What to do before you start
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off, and shut the gas tap on a gas dryer. Lint is fuel: if there is any burning smell, leave the machine off and do not run it again to see whether the smell returns. Never operate the dryer with the duct disconnected for longer than the few seconds a test needs.
When to stop and call
The owner side of this fault is the entire airflow path plus the supply. Call for everything else, and call the same day if the dryer heats briefly and cuts out repeatedly, because that is a protection device operating over and over.
