USDR models take this one slightly differently. A dryer that tumbles without heating is, more often than anything else, a venting problem. Restricted airflow trips a thermal cut-out, the heat stops, and the drum keeps turning — which is exactly how the appliance is designed to protect itself. What this looks like on a USDR unit
- The outside vent flap does not open when the dryer runs — Very little air is leaving, which is the whole fault in one observation. It is the first thing worth confirming on a USDR unit.
- On a gas dryer, no smell of gas and no ignition sound — The supply or the igniter, and the branch is different from an electric machine.
- On an electric dryer, everything works except heat — Half a double breaker can trip and leave exactly this.
- NEAR MISS: the drum does not turn at all — That is a start or a motor fault and belongs on a different page.
Ranked causes on the USDR line
- A blocked lint filter — Ranked first because it is free, instant, and the most common restriction of all. A filter that looks clear can be sealed by fabric-softener film that water beads on rather than passes through. This holds its place across the USDR models listed below.
- One half of a double breaker tripped, on an electric dryer — Distinctive: the drum turns because the motor has its supply, and the element does not because it has lost the other half.
- A failed thermostat or control — Last, and diagnosed by elimination after the airflow path has been proven clear.
Check in this order, and why
- Pull the lint filter and hold it under a running tap — Water that beads and sits on the mesh rather than running straight through means it is sealed with softener film. The USDR layout is the reason it comes first here.
- Disconnect the duct at the back and run the dryer briefly — Strong hot air with the duct off, and nothing with it on, names the duct conclusively.
- Check both halves of the breaker on an electric dryer — Switch it fully off and back on rather than trusting its position.

If you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself. For any other work, unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker first, and close the gas tap on a gas appliance — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.

When this becomes a service call
Call once the filter, the filter housing, the duct and the vent hood are all genuinely clear and the breaker or gas tap is proven good, and there is still no heat. The element, the igniter, the thermostats and the thermal fuse are all tested electrically. Call at once if there is any burning smell.
