The short answer
Poor cleaning on the FITW line has a short list of causes and they rank in a specific order — blocked spray arms first, a fouled filter second, water temperature third. Grit left on plates and a film left on glass are different faults with different answers, so it is worth deciding which one you have before changing anything. Because only one model number carries the FITW name, nothing below needs a variant caveat.
What you observe on these models
- Detergent left undissolved in the dispenser — The dispenser flap did not open, or it opened into a load item blocking it, so the wash ran on water alone.
- Grit and food left on the upper rack only — The upper arm is not being fed or not turning; the lower rack cleans because the lower arm is still working.
- A chalky white film on glasses and the tub — Hard-water scale or too little detergent for the hardness, rather than a mechanical fault.
- Food redeposited evenly as a thin layer — The filter is fouled and the machine is recirculating what it washed off, which looks like bad cleaning but is bad filtering.
- Plates come out barely warm — The water is not reaching wash temperature, so grease is smeared rather than dissolved.
- NEAR MISS — everything is clean but wet — That is a drying complaint and belongs on a different page; the wash itself is working.
Causes, most likely first on the FITW line
- Blocked or obstructed spray arms — First, and the cheapest to rule out. An arm that cannot complete a turn washes an arc rather than a circle, and the owner reads the untouched arc as a weak machine.
- Fouled filter recirculating soil — Next most likely on these models. It ranks high because it worsens slowly and is therefore rarely suspected by the owner.
- Wash water not reaching temperature — Third — worth checking once the two above are clean. Grease needs heat, not pressure; a machine filling with lukewarm water will move food around and never lift fat from a plate.
Check in this order, and why
- Take both arms out and hold them up to the light — Every jet should show daylight. Clear the blocked ones with a pin, then refit and spin each arm by hand to confirm a full free turn.
- Remove the filter and look at the sump beneath — If the mesh is greasy rather than merely dirty, wash it in hot water with detergent — rinsing under a cold tap does not clear fat.
- Run the hot tap at the sink before starting a cycle — Run it until it is properly hot, then start the machine. If cleaning improves on that cycle alone, the problem is the first fill, not the appliance.

Kill the power at the breaker first: a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Treat standing water as if it holds glass, scoop it out rather than feeling through it, and leave the door interlock alone — it is what keeps scalding water inside the cabinet.

When to call a technician
