The short answer
A glassware dishwasher that has stopped cleaning properly usually comes down to one thing: glasses are etching or clouding rather than being left dirty. Next on the list: the detergent or the rinse aid is wrong for the water. Note the pattern first — whether it is the whole load, one rack, or one kind of item — because that decides which of these it is.
What you observe
- Dishes come out needing to be washed again — Note whether it is the whole load or only part of it.
- Glasses come out cloudy rather than dirty — Film and etch look alike and have opposite causes.
- Results changed when the detergent or the household water did — The machine did not change; its inputs did.
- A gritty film on glasses and the insides of cups — Debris is being carried back rather than carried away.

Causes, most likely first on this machine
- Glasses are etching or clouding rather than being left dirty — First on a glassware machine, because cloudy glass is usually not dirt at all: it is minerals deposited from hard water, or etching from a hot cycle with too much detergent and too soft a water supply. Neither responds to a longer programme, and one of them is permanent.

- Run the hot tap at the sink before starting a cycle — A machine fed from a cold pipe never catches up on a short programme.

Safety
Switch the machine off at its spur or breaker before removing any panel, and close the isolating valve before touching a hose. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A glassware machine collects glass chips in its sump more often than any other. Always use gloves, always look before you reach, and empty the sump with a cup rather than a hand.
When to call a technician
Call once the filter is clean, the arms turn freely with the racks loaded, the jets are clear and the dose is right, and dishes still come out dirty. At that point it is the wash pump, the heater or the diverter, and all three are behind the tub. Call immediately if the machine trips the breaker, or if there is a burning smell during the wash.
