Control complaints on a dryer are usually the machine ending a cycle on a condition rather than a control board going bad — a sensor reading, a thermostat opening, or a programme that does not do what the owner expects. What owners actually report
- The cycle ends within minutes of starting — Classic moisture-sensor behaviour: the machine believes the load is already dry.
- Buttons need a hard press or do not respond — Panel membrane wear rather than board failure, and it develops gradually.
- The display shows a code and the machine halts — Note the step it stopped at — heat, tumble or cool-down — because that is what names the circuit.
- The machine runs on and never ends — A sensor that never reports dry, usually because it is coated or because the airflow is too poor to change the reading.
- NEAR MISS — nothing lights up at all — That is supply or door-switch territory rather than control logic.
The ranking that matters
- Moisture sensor coated or misreading — First. The sensor bars sit inside the drum where fabric softener films them, and a filmed sensor reports dry on a wet load — which produces both the short cycle and the endless one depending on which way it errs.
- Thermostat or thermal cut-out interrupting the cycle — Second, and it is a symptom of restricted airflow far more often than of a failed thermostat. The control looks faulty because the machine halts, but the machine is protecting itself.
- Panel membrane or selector switch wear — Third. On a mechanical-timer machine this is the timer contact; on an electronic one it is the membrane. Both give partial, position-dependent response.
- Control board failure — Last. Boards fail after surges or moisture, and when they do they usually fail visibly and completely rather than intermittently.
The diagnostic order
- Run a timed cycle instead of an automatic one — A timed programme ignores the moisture sensor entirely. If the timed cycle behaves, the sensor is the answer.
- Note the point at which the machine halts — Consistent halting at the heat step is thermal; halting anywhere is electrical.
- Try every button and note which respond — Partial response is a panel verdict and it takes no tools.

- Clean the moisture sensor bars — Wipe the metal strips inside the drum near the lint opening with a little vinegar on a cloth to strip softener film.

The safety boundary on this repair

Power off at the breaker before any panel comes away, and treat the heater terminals as live until proven otherwise. A dryer fire almost always starts in accumulated lint, so the lint path is part of the safety job, not part of the cleaning job. Do not run the machine with the door switch defeated.
Where owner work ends
Cleaning the sensor, clearing the duct and power-cycling are the owner-side moves and they resolve a good share of control complaints. Past that, the console comes off and the machine is mains-live inside. Book a visit rather than replacing a board on the strength of a code — on a dryer the code usually names a thermal device, not the processor.
