What you observe
- A rhythmic thump once per drum revolution — A flat spot on a roller, or something stuck to the drum. It matches drum speed rather than motor speed.
- A high squeal that rises and falls with the cycle — Idler pulley or a glazed belt. It typically appears when the machine is cold and eases as it warms.
- A rattle or ticking that changes when the drum is loaded — Something in the blower housing — a coin or a button that got past the lint screen.
- Deep grinding that gets worse over weeks — Roller or bearing wear, and it does not recover.
- NEAR MISS — a loud hum with no drum movement — That is a start or belt fault, not a noise fault. Turn the drum by hand to tell them apart.
Causes, most likely first
- Worn drum support rollers — First. The drum rides on plastic or rubber-tyred rollers that flat-spot and seize with age, and they carry the whole drum weight — which is why they produce the loudest and most rhythmic noises.
- Idler pulley or tensioner wear — Second, and it is the classic squeal: a small pulley holding belt tension with a plain bearing that dries out. It is inexpensive and it is often replaced alongside the belt.
- Debris in the blower housing — Third. Coins and buttons get past the screen and rattle in the blower wheel; the sound is metallic and changes as the wheel speed changes.
- Glazed or damaged belt — Fourth. A belt that has hardened slips and squeals under load, especially on a heavy cold load, and its noise is load-dependent in a way roller noise is not.
Where to start, and why there
- Turn the drum by hand with the machine off — Roughness, notchiness or a grinding you can feel through the drum is a roller verdict without any dismantling.
- Note whether the noise tracks the drum or the motor — Once-per-revolution noises are drum-side; faster, constant noises are blower-side.
- Run the machine briefly empty — An empty drum removes the load variable, and a noise that disappears empty is a belt or balance issue.

The heater and its thermal cut-outs are wired in the hottest part of the cabinet, so the wiring insulation there gets brittle with age — inspect it while you are inside, and replace anything cracked rather than taping it.
When to call a technician
Call when the drum feels rough or notchy turned by hand, because that is a roller or bearing verdict and it only gets worse — a seized roller will wear a flat onto itself and then start scoring the drum. Call promptly for any grinding noise: unlike a squeal, grinding means two metal parts are already in contact, and continuing to run the machine converts a cheap parts job into a drum replacement.
