The short answer
On the Aviva ALFW washing machine line, check the obvious outside things before pulling the machine out: the breaker, any isolating switch, and the socket. They are the most common answer and the quickest to test. What changes against the brand-generic answer is the order of the checks, not the list of causes.
What an owner actually sees on a ALFW unit
- No lights, no beep, no response at all — A supply problem: the breaker, an isolating switch, or the socket. Read this one against the ALFW models listed below.
- A delay indicator with the machine apparently idle — A delayed start somebody set and nobody remembers.
- The breaker trips as soon as the cycle is started — A genuine electrical fault, and a reason to leave the breaker off.
- A brief hum and then silence — Power is arriving at something, which separates this from a dead panel.
- NEAR MISS: it starts and stops part way through — That is a cycle fault and it has its own page.
Causes in likelihood order on the ALFW line
- A door lock that is not engaging — Ranked first. The control will not start a cycle it cannot confirm the door for, and a worn lock or a dropped door produces a machine that appears dead. On the ALFW models this stays at the top because nothing about the platform makes it less likely.
- An active child lock — Second, and pure settings. Small indicator, held-button reset, and nothing wrong with the machine.
- A delayed start left set — The machine is doing what it was told. Free to rule out and easy to miss.
- A failed control board or mains filter — Last and least likely, and what remains when everything above is clean.
Where to start, and why
- Close the door firmly and listen for the lock — A definite click is the machine confirming the door. No click is the answer. The ALFW layout is the reason it comes first here.
- Check the breaker and any isolating switch — One turned off during unrelated work is among the most common causes here.
- Look for a child-lock or delay indicator on the panel — Both are settings that look exactly like faults and clear in seconds.
- Read any error code or flash pattern before cutting power — A reset clears the display as well as the state, and with it the evidence.

Disconnect power before inspecting the door assembly or the filter, and expect water if the drum is not empty. Get help before pulling the machine out: it is heavy, and the hoses behind it are what gets damaged when one is dragged.
