What this usually means
On the Aviva ALFW washing machine line, find out where in the cycle it stops. A stall at the fill is a supply problem, a stall before the spin is a drainage or balance problem, and a stall at random points is usually the control. What changes against the brand-generic answer is the order of the checks, not the list of causes.
The observations that matter on a ALFW unit
- The timer sits on the same reading for a long time — Many machines hold the display while they wait for a condition rather than counting down. On the ALFW line this is where the checking starts.
- It attempts to spin, slows, and tries again repeatedly — A balance retry loop, which ends in the machine abandoning the spin.
- The problem is worse with heavy items like towels or a single duvet — A balance story, and it is the most common version of this fault.
- NEAR MISS: the cycle completes but the load is soaking — That is drainage or spin, and the drainage page covers it.
What it usually turns out to be on the ALFW line
- An unbalanced load the machine cannot spin — Ranked first. The machine tries to redistribute, fails, retries and abandons the spin, and the cycle never completes. - A blocked drain path — Second. The control will not move on from a drum it cannot empty, so a blocked pump filter stops the cycle as effectively as a broken part.

- Check whether short cold cycles complete — They usually do when the fault is heating, and that narrows it sharply.

Power off at the plug or the breaker, and close the taps before touching an inlet hose. Leave the door lock and its wiring exactly as built. A stalled machine with a full drum is a machine doing its job, not one to be overridden.
