The short answer for RMX models
When an Avanti RMX refrigerator hums but the shelves are warm, the fault is usually in how cold air moves rather than in how it is made. A stalled defrost, a blocked condenser or a stopped circulating fan all read as the same warm cabinet, and they separate in that order on these machines. Only the last of the three is licensed work.
Signs you can observe
- The compressor runs and never stops — For RMX models, a unit that cannot reach temperature never satisfies its thermostat, so it simply keeps going.
- The cabinet is cool but never really cold — On the RMX line, partial cooling is the commonest version of this fault and the one most often misread as a refrigerant problem.
- The compressor runs constantly and never cycles off — Looking at RMX models specifically, a unit that never rests is working hard for nothing, and that is measurable on the bill before it is obvious in the cabinet.
- Warm air blows from the vents instead of cold — On the RMX line, the fan is running and moving room-temperature air, so the evaporator behind it is not cold.
- NEAR MISS — the unit is silent and nothing is cold — That is a no-power, start-relay or control fault, and it is a different page. If you hear nothing at all, go there instead.
What goes wrong here, most frequent first
- A stalled defrost cycle icing the evaporator — Ranked here because adaptive defrost stalls quietly long before it fails outright: the ice sheet grows over weeks and the owner notices warmth, never frost.
- A stopped or dying evaporator fan motor — The fan is the wear part behind the rear panel, and when it stops the cabinet warms with nothing to show for it — no frost sheet, no noise. On the RMX models below the ranking is the same.
- A sealed-system or compressor fault — Last, and that ordering is the point: it is the least common cause and the only one that is not an owner fix.
Work through these in order
- Open the door and listen for the circulating fan — For the RMX line, hold the door switch in if you must — the fan should be audible within a second or two, and silence narrows the list immediately.
- Empty the cabinet and leave it off with the door shut — Give it long enough for the sheet to melt completely, dry the panel, then run it again and watch how fast the cold comes back.
- Listen for whether the compressor ever stops — On RMX models, a unit that cycles is reaching its setpoint; one that runs continuously is not.

Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Work dry, and never chip ice off the evaporator with a screwdriver or a knife: the tubing behind it is thin aluminium and one puncture turns a defrost fault into a sealed-system replacement. Let the ice melt instead.

When to hand it over
Call once the clearance is right, the seal passes a paper test, the condenser is clean, the vents inside are clear and a thermometer still says the cabinet cannot hold its temperature. What is left is the sealed system, the compressor or the control, and none of those is owner work.
