What this usually is on RMRS cabinets
Water from an RMRS refrigerator has four plausible sources and they are distinguished by location rather than by volume. The list below is ordered on that: each cause is paired with where its water shows up, so the position of the puddle picks the cause rather than the other way round.
What the owner sees
- Water at the back, near the wall — On a cabinet with a water supply this is the line or its connection; without one it is the pan.
- Beads of water around the door frame or on the outside of the cabinet — Condensation rather than a leak — warm damp air meeting a cold surface.
- A layer of ice under the bottom drawer — Water sitting in the channel and freezing where the air is coldest.
- A musty smell with damp at the base of the cabinet — Standing water in a channel that has not drained for some time.
- NEAR MISS — water plus a cabinet that is no longer cold — That combination is a cooling fault with melt as its symptom, and the cooling article is the right place to start.
What it usually turns out to be, in order
- Cabinet not level, so condensate runs the wrong way — The channels inside a refrigerator rely on a slight tilt backwards to work. Ranked first on RMRS: it is not a fault of the machine at all but of how it has been put in, and that varies far more across these seven codes than the hardware does.
- Containers or packaging blocking the internal channel — The channel that carries melt to the drain runs along the back of the compartment, and a drawer pushed hard back or a box standing in the channel dams it. It ranks second on RMRS rather than first only because the cause above it is quicker to exclude, not because it is rarer.
- Frost building where it should not, then melting — Ice that forms on the rear wall or around a vent melts when the machine cycles off, and that melt arrives somewhere the drain was never meant to serve. Third on RMRS: it is still something you can see rather than measure, but it takes the cabinet emptied or moved and the two above it do not.
The diagnostic order
- Where to begin on this model group — The first checks are the ones that can be made with the cabinet standing where it is; moving it comes later and only if those are clean.
- Check the cabinet sits square and slightly back — A spirit level across the top, or a door that swings open on its own, tells you in seconds.
- Empty the bottom of the cabinet and look at the channel — It should be clear along its length and slope toward the drain opening.
- Look for frost in places that should be clear — The rear wall, the vents and the area around the door are the three that matter.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Isolate before you open: unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker, and remember that a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water and a live cabinet are the combination to avoid here — dry the floor before you start, and if the fault has already put water near the plug or the cord, isolate at the breaker rather than by pulling the plug out of a wet socket.

Where the owner fix stops
Call when the next step would need a meter, and call earlier than that for three things: a breaker that will not stay in, a plug or cord warm to the touch, and oil at any joint in the tubing.
