What this usually is on RA cabinets
Ice is the last thing a refrigerator does and the first thing it stops doing, so on an RA cabinet a slow or absent ice supply is often the earliest sign of something else. A freezer section that is running a little warm makes ice slowly long before anything else looks wrong. That is why temperature comes into this diagnosis as early as it does.
What the owner sees
- A spike or a column of ice at the back of the compartment — The fill tube has frozen and each fill is icing up before it reaches the mould.
- A knock in the pipework each time it fills — Water hammer at the fill valve, which is a plumbing symptom rather than an ice maker one.
- The ice tastes or smells of the cabinet — Old ice in a bin absorbs odour; it is a housekeeping matter rather than a fault.
- NEAR MISS — no ice and the food in the freezer is soft — That is a cooling fault first. Fix the temperature and the ice usually returns on its own.

- Water supply shut off, kinked or restricted at the valve — The supply usually starts at a small valve under a sink or behind the cabinet, and that valve is the part most often found half closed or silted up. It heads the list on RA because it is not really a fault of the machine: it is where the machine has been put, and that is free to change.
- Freezer section not cold enough to cycle the mould — An ice maker only harvests once the mould reaches its release temperature, so a compartment running a few degrees warm makes ice slowly or stops entirely. It ranks second on RA rather than first only because the cause above it is quicker to exclude, not because it is rarer.
- Fill valve or its inlet screen blocked — The inlet screen catches grit from the supply and is a common restriction; the valve itself is electrically opened and can fail closed. Third: common enough on refrigeration generally, but on a cabinet of this size the two above it account for most of what walks in the door.
Work through it in this order
- The order for RA cabinets — It is arranged so that everything visible from inside the compartment is settled before anything behind or beneath the cabinet is touched.
- Follow the line back to its shutoff and open it fully — Then look along the line for a kink where the cabinet meets the wall.
- Judge the freezer section by the food in it — Ice cream that is soft and packets that flex are a temperature answer, not an ice maker answer.
- Judge the fill by the cubes it makes — Hollow or half-height cubes mean water is arriving but not enough of it, which points at the screen before the valve.
Isolate the machine first

Isolate before you open: unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker, and remember that a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water and a live cabinet are the combination to avoid here — dry the floor before you start, and if the fault has already put water near the plug or the cord, isolate at the breaker rather than by pulling the plug out of a wet socket.
