The short answer for RA models
Noise on the RA family sorts into three places: the compressor and its mounts, the two fans and what they can hit, and the cabinet itself acting as a sounding board. Each has a distinctive signature and none of the first checks needs a tool. What follows is the order that separates them fastest.
What this looks like at the cabinet
- A low buzz or hum that rises and falls with the compressor — The pitch is steady while it runs and stops dead when it cycles off.
- A brief hiss shortly after the machine shuts down — Pressure equalising. Like the gurgle it is normal, and it is worth naming so that it does not get repaired.
- A scraping or ticking that speeds up and slows down — A blade catching something, and it changes as the blade changes speed.
- A whine that has built up over weeks rather than appearing overnight — A bearing drying out gives exactly that slow onset.
- NEAR MISS — the noise arrived with water on the floor — Noise plus water is a drain or a pan problem first and a noise problem second, and the leak article covers it properly.
The ranked causes for this family
- Tubing or a wire resting against the cabinet — The suction line and the capillary run close to sheet metal, and a line that has been nudged during a move can end up touching it. The result is a buzz at exactly compressor frequency that no amount of levelling changes. Ranked first here: it is both the commonest cause of this complaint on compact refrigeration and the cheapest to rule out, which is the same reason it belongs before anything requiring a panel.
- Cabinet touching a wall, a counter or another appliance — Anything the cabinet touches becomes part of the instrument. A unit set into a recess or pushed against a dishwasher transmits its normal running noise into a much larger surface, and the complaint is a machine that suddenly got loud without anything failing. Second on this family: it produces the same complaint as the cause above it, so the two have to be separated before either is acted on.
- Condenser fan blade striking debris, or its bearing dry — The condenser fan lives at the bottom of the cabinet where paper, dust and pet hair collect. A blade brushing debris ticks at blade rate; a dry bearing whines and gets louder over weeks rather than overnight. Third on RA, and the first rank on the list where the answer is a part rather than a condition.
The diagnostic order
- Where to begin on this model group — The first two checks change the noise if they are the cause, which makes them self-proving; everything after them requires a look behind or under the cabinet.
- Look along the tubing at the back for a contact point — A bright rubbed mark on the metal says where. Do not bend the tubing; note it for the technician.
- Pull the cabinet clear of everything it touches — Even a finger's width of air changes the sound if contact is the cause.
- Isolate the machine and turn the condenser fan by hand — It should spin freely and stop smoothly. Grinding or a catch names the part.

Isolate first: unplug the machine, or switch off the breaker if the socket is behind the cabinet. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Then think about the weight — a refrigerator is top-loaded and moves badly on a hard floor, so empty the door shelves before you walk it out, and never let it lean on the tubing at the back.

Where the owner fix stops
Two conditions make this a service call rather than a Saturday job: the cause is behind a sealed panel, or the cause is the sealed system itself. Either way the tools are not owner tools and the refrigerant is not owner-serviceable.
