The answer first
An MCR cabinet that has become loud is telling you which of its moving parts has changed. There are only three that move — two fans and a compressor — plus everything they can make vibrate. Matching the sound to the part is most of the job, and the list below is ordered by which match is easiest to confirm.
How the fault presents
- The noise changes when you push the cabinet or open the door — Proof it is contact or resonance rather than a part failing.
- Opening the door makes the noise stop — The door switch cuts the evaporator fan, so anything that stops with the door belongs to it.
- A hum that you feel through the floor more than you hear — Vibration transmitted through the feet into the structure, which makes the room the amplifier.
- A whine that has built up over weeks rather than appearing overnight — A bearing drying out gives exactly that slow onset.
- NEAR MISS — the noise arrived with water on the floor — Noise plus water is a drain or a pan problem first and a noise problem second, and the leak article covers it properly.
What it usually turns out to be, in order
- Cabinet not level, or feet not all carrying weight — A compact refrigerator on four feet only needs one of them to be short for the whole cabinet to rock on the compressor's own vibration. The noise is a buzz or a drum rather than a rattle, and it changes the moment you lean on a corner. It heads the list on MCR because it is not really a fault of the machine: it is where the machine has been put, and that is free to change.
- Condenser fan blade striking debris, or its bearing dry — The condenser fan lives at the bottom of the cabinet where paper, dust and pet hair collect. A blade brushing debris ticks at blade rate; a dry bearing whines and gets louder over weeks rather than overnight. Second on this family: it produces the same complaint as the cause above it, so the two have to be separated before either is acted on.
- Relay, control or defrost timer clicking on schedule — A click every few minutes, or a clunk on a long period, is a switching noise. It is usually normal; it becomes a fault only when it is accompanied by a compressor that tries to start and gives up, which is a repeated click at short intervals. Ranked third here, because the two causes above it are both quicker to settle and more often the answer on a cabinet of this size.
What to check first, second, third
- Listen with the room quiet — A compact cabinet is quiet enough that the diagnosis depends on hearing which part the sound follows, which is not possible with a television on in the same room.
- Lean on each corner in turn while it runs — If the sound changes, the cabinet is rocking and the feet are the fix. This takes seconds and settles the commonest cause.
- Isolate the machine and turn the condenser fan by hand — It should spin freely and stop smoothly. Grinding or a catch names the part.
- Time the clicks against what the compressor does — A click that starts the compressor is normal. A click that does not, repeating every few seconds, is a start fault.

Power off before anything else — the plug out, or the breaker open. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Two other hazards belong to this appliance specifically: the door switch, which stops a fan blade you would otherwise reach past, and the condenser fins, which are sharp enough to open a knuckle without warning.

Where the owner fix stops
Call once the owner-side checks above are clean and the cabinet is still wrong. Call without finishing the list if the fault is on the sealed system — if you can see oil at the compressor or at a tubing joint, or you smell burning — because oil outside the tubing means the system is open, and every hour the unit runs after that costs more to put right.
