The ice stopped right after we defrosted it - why?

Usually because the control was left off, or the arm was left resting up, when everything went back together. That is the first thing to check and it costs nothing.

Is it worth repairing an ice maker on an older cabinet?

It depends entirely on which step has stopped, and the common stoppages are free to fix. Get the cause named first, because replacing a mechanism that was only switched off is a costly way to find that out.

Does a full freezer help or hurt ice production?

A reasonably full compartment holds its temperature better, which helps. A compartment packed so tightly that air cannot move, or a bin packed hard against the arm, hurts.

How do I know whether my model even has an ice maker?

Look for the mould, the wire bail arm and the fill tube at the top of the freezing compartment. If those are absent the model was not built to make ice automatically, whatever the complaint has been called.

Why have all the cubes frozen into one lump?

Because they melted a little and refroze, which means the compartment has been swinging above freezing. Check the door seal and whether the door has been standing ajar before looking at the mechanism.
