What this usually is on FC cabinets
A noisy FC refrigerator is usually a fault of installation rather than of manufacture — feet out of adjustment, a cabinet against a wall, a pan that has shifted. On a compact machine there is less mass to absorb vibration, so a small imbalance is audible in a way it would not be on a full-size unit. That is why levelling leads the order.
What the owner sees
- The noise changes when you push the cabinet or open the door — Proof it is contact or resonance rather than a part failing.
- A brief hiss shortly after the machine shuts down — Pressure equalising. Like the gurgle it is normal, and it is worth naming so that it does not get repaired.
- It is loud at the start of a run and settles after a minute — A start transient rather than a running fault, and it usually points at mounts.
- NEAR MISS — the noise arrived with water on the floor — Noise plus water is a drain or a pan problem first and a noise problem second, and the leak article covers it properly.
Causes, most likely first on FC models
- Drain pan loose, warped or resting off its bracket — The pan sits over the compressor where it is both hot and in the vibration path. On FC this is where to start, because the alternative first checks all need the cabinet moved or a panel off and this one does not.
- Cabinet not level, or feet not all carrying weight — A compact refrigerator on four feet only needs one of them to be short for the whole cabinet to rock on the compressor's own vibration. It ranks second on FC rather than first only because the cause above it is quicker to exclude, not because it is rarer.
- Cabinet touching a wall, a counter or another appliance — Anything the cabinet touches becomes part of the instrument. A unit set into a recess or pushed against a dishwasher transmits its normal running noise into a much larger surface, and the complaint is a machine that suddenly got loud without anything failing. Third on FC: it is still something you can see rather than measure, but it takes the cabinet emptied or moved and the two above it do not.
The order of checks, and why it is this one
- The order and the reason for it — Levelling and clearance are free and reversible; a fan or a pan needs the machine isolated and moved. Doing the free half first is the whole of the method.
- Look at the pan with the machine isolated — It should sit square and hold still when you press it. A pan that moves under a finger is the rattle.
- Lean on each corner in turn while it runs — If the sound changes, the cabinet is rocking and the feet are the fix. This takes seconds and settles the commonest cause.
- Pull the cabinet clear of everything it touches — Even a finger's width of air changes the sound if contact is the cause.
Safety before diagnosis
Safety
Switch the breaker off or unplug the unit before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Anything you do behind the freezer rear panel happens next to a fan blade that the door switch is there to stop, so leave that switch alone.

Where the owner fix stops
Call when the next step would need a meter, and call earlier than that for three things: a breaker that will not stay in, a plug or cord warm to the touch, and oil at any joint in the tubing. Everything above those lines is owner work and most of it needs no tool at all, which is why the order puts it first.
