The short answer for FF models
Noise on the FF family sorts into three places: the compressor and its mounts, the two fans and what they can hit, and the cabinet itself acting as a sounding board. Each has a distinctive signature and none of the first checks needs a tool. What follows is the order that separates them fastest.
What this looks like at the cabinet
- A rattle from low down at the back of the cabinet — It usually starts a second or two after the compressor does, which is the clue that it is being driven rather than generated.
- Opening the door makes the noise stop — The door switch cuts the evaporator fan, so anything that stops with the door belongs to it.
- It is loud at the start of a run and settles after a minute — A start transient rather than a running fault, and it usually points at mounts.
- NEAR MISS — the noise arrived with water on the floor — Noise plus water is a drain or a pan problem first and a noise problem second, and the leak article covers it properly.
Causes in likelihood order on this model group
- Cabinet touching a wall, a counter or another appliance — Anything the cabinet touches becomes part of the instrument. A unit set into a recess or pushed against a dishwasher transmits its normal running noise into a much larger surface, and the complaint is a machine that suddenly got loud without anything failing. On FF this is where to start, because the alternative first checks all need the cabinet moved or a panel off and this one does not.
- Cabinet not level, or feet not all carrying weight — A compact refrigerator on four feet only needs one of them to be short for the whole cabinet to rock on the compressor's own vibration. Ranked second because it explains the cases the first cause does not, and because on this family the two are checked from the same side of the cabinet.
- Condenser fan blade striking debris, or its bearing dry — The condenser fan lives at the bottom of the cabinet where paper, dust and pet hair collect. Third: common enough on refrigeration generally, but on a cabinet of this size the two above it account for most of what walks in the door.
The diagnostic order
- Two minutes before any tool — Lean on the cabinet, then pull it clear of what it touches. Between them those two moves settle the majority of noise complaints on compact refrigeration.
- Pull the cabinet clear of everything it touches — Even a finger's width of air changes the sound if contact is the cause.
- Lean on each corner in turn while it runs — If the sound changes, the cabinet is rocking and the feet are the fix. This takes seconds and settles the commonest cause.
- Isolate the machine and turn the condenser fan by hand — It should spin freely and stop smoothly. Grinding or a catch names the part.

Isolate the machine first: unplug it, or switch off its breaker if the plug is behind the cabinet. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, so wait before touching any terminal.

When to call a technician
