What this usually is on CF cabinets
A CF unit that makes no ice is usually short of water rather than short of cold. Supply valves left half open, a saddle valve that has silted up, and a fill tube frozen shut account for most of it, and all three are visible. A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (minus 18 °C) or below, and an ice maker needs the compartment near that to cycle at all.
How the fault presents
- A spike or a column of ice at the back of the compartment — The fill tube has frozen and each fill is icing up before it reaches the mould.
- It stopped after work was done on the house plumbing — A shutoff left closed and grit stirred into the line are the two usual consequences.
- Ice is made, but far more slowly than it used to be — Almost always a temperature drift in the freezer section rather than a fault in the ice maker.
- A knock in the pipework each time it fills — Water hammer at the fill valve, which is a plumbing symptom rather than an ice maker one.
- NEAR MISS — no ice and the food in the freezer is soft — That is a cooling fault first. Fix the temperature and the ice usually returns on its own.
Causes, most likely first on CF models
- Water supply shut off, kinked or restricted at the valve — The supply usually starts at a small valve under a sink or behind the cabinet, and that valve is the part most often found half closed or silted up. Ranked first here: it is both the commonest cause of this complaint on compact refrigeration and the cheapest to rule out, which is the same reason it belongs before anything requiring a panel.
- Fill tube frozen shut — If a fill overshoots or the compartment runs very cold, the tube that delivers water can ice over, and every subsequent fill adds to the blockage rather than reaching the mould. Second because it is nearly as common but takes longer to confirm, and confirming it in the wrong order wastes the time the first check would have saved.
- Fill valve or its inlet screen blocked — The inlet screen catches grit from the supply and is a common restriction; the valve itself is electrically opened and can fail closed. Third on this family, and the rank where the cause stops being obvious from the doorway.
Work through it in this order
- Where to begin on this model group — Two of the causes above are not faults at all, and both are excluded from the doorway of the freezer section. They come first for that reason.
- Follow the line back to its shutoff and open it fully — Then look along the line for a kink where the cabinet meets the wall.
- Look for ice at the back of the compartment above the mould — A visible spike of ice is the fault. Clearing it is a temporary fix; what caused the overshoot is the real question.
- Judge the fill by the cubes it makes — Hollow or half-height cubes mean water is arriving but not enough of it, which points at the screen before the valve.
Before you touch anything
Safety
Isolate the machine first: unplug it, or switch off its breaker if the plug is behind the cabinet. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, so wait before touching any terminal. Sealed-system work is a separate category — the tubing carries refrigerant under pressure, cutting or unbrazing it is licensed work, and nothing on this page asks you to open it.

When this stops being owner work
Call if the list above runs out without a cause, and call first rather than last if the fault involves water near live parts, a breaker that will not stay in, or a burning smell. A CF cabinet is small enough that a technician confirms most of these in a single visit, so there is little value in a long owner diagnosis once the cheap causes are excluded.
