What is happening, in three sentences
A CF cabinet that has become loud is telling you which of its moving parts has changed. There are only three that move — two fans and a compressor — plus everything they can make vibrate. Matching the sound to the part is most of the job, and the list below is ordered by which match is easiest to confirm.
The observable symptoms
- A single knock when the machine starts or stops — The compressor moving on its mounts as the load comes on or off.
- A rattle from low down at the back of the cabinet — It usually starts a second or two after the compressor does, which is the clue that it is being driven rather than generated.
- A brief hiss shortly after the machine shuts down — Pressure equalising. Like the gurgle it is normal, and it is worth naming so that it does not get repaired.
- A click or a clunk every few minutes — Regular, brief, and unrelated to whether the door is open — a switching noise rather than a mechanical one.
- NEAR MISS — the noise arrived and the cabinet stopped getting cold — A fan that has stopped is both quieter and warmer; that combination belongs with the cooling article rather than this one.
The ranked causes for this family
- Cabinet not level, or feet not all carrying weight — A compact refrigerator on four feet only needs one of them to be short for the whole cabinet to rock on the compressor's own vibration. First on this family because it needs nothing taken apart — on a cabinet this size it is a look and a listen, and excluding it costs less than five minutes.
- Drain pan loose, warped or resting off its bracket — The pan sits over the compressor where it is both hot and in the vibration path. It ranks second on CF rather than first only because the cause above it is quicker to exclude, not because it is rarer.
- Tubing or a wire resting against the cabinet — The suction line and the capillary run close to sheet metal, and a line that has been nudged during a move can end up touching it. Third: real, but it usually announces itself with something the first two causes do not produce, so the earlier checks will have already pointed at it.
What to check first, second, third
- The order and the reason for it — Levelling and clearance are free and reversible; a fan or a pan needs the machine isolated and moved. Doing the free half first is the whole of the method.
- Lean on each corner in turn while it runs — If the sound changes, the cabinet is rocking and the feet are the fix. This takes seconds and settles the commonest cause.
- Look at the pan with the machine isolated — It should sit square and hold still when you press it. A pan that moves under a finger is the rattle.
- Look along the tubing at the back for a contact point — A bright rubbed mark on the metal says where. Do not bend the tubing; note it for the technician.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Switch the breaker off or unplug the unit before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Anything you do behind the freezer rear panel happens next to a fan blade that the door switch is there to stop, so leave that switch alone. If the cabinet has to come out to reach the condenser, clear the run first and move it in short steps rather than one long pull.

When this stops being owner work
Stop and call when the next step would be a panel, a meter or a gauge. On a cabinet this size the components sit close together and a probe in the wrong place shorts something that was not broken when you started.
