Water from an AVRA refrigerator has four plausible sources and they are distinguished by location rather than by volume. The list below is ordered on that: each cause is paired with where its water shows up, so the position of the puddle picks the cause rather than the other way round.
The observable symptoms
- The gasket itself is wet along one edge — That edge is where room air is getting in, and it is where the seal test should start.
- It only leaks after the cabinet has been filled — A packed compartment blocks the channel that carries melt to the drain.
- A musty smell with damp at the base of the cabinet — Standing water in a channel that has not drained for some time.
- NEAR MISS — water plus a new rattle from underneath — A pan that has shifted makes noise and spills at the same time, and both stop when it is seated properly.
Causes, most likely first on AVRA models
- Cabinet not level, so condensate runs the wrong way — The channels inside a refrigerator rely on a slight tilt backwards to work. It heads the list on AVRA because it is not really a fault of the machine: it is where the machine has been put, and that is free to change.
- Door seal letting warm damp air in — A gasket that no longer seals admits room air, and that air gives up its moisture on the first cold surface it meets. Second because it is nearly as common but takes longer to confirm, and confirming it in the wrong order wastes the time the first check would have saved.
- Water supply line, its connection or the fill valve — Only models plumbed for water have this cause at all, and where it exists it is the one that matters most: a supply leak is continuous rather than cyclic and it does not stop on its own. Third: common enough on refrigeration generally, but on a cabinet of this size the two above it account for most of what walks in the door.
The diagnostic order
- The order and why — Two of the causes above are settled from inside the cabinet and two need it pulled out. Doing the inside pair first avoids moving a full machine for nothing.
- Check the cabinet sits square and slightly back — A spirit level across the top, or a door that swings open on its own, tells you in seconds.
- Test the seal with a strip of paper at four points — A strip that pulls out without resistance shows where the air is getting in, and that spot is usually where the water is worst.
- If the cabinet is plumbed, dry the fitting and watch it — A fitting that is wet again within minutes is the leak. Close the shutoff before doing anything else.

Isolate before you open: unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker, and remember that a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water and a live cabinet are the combination to avoid here — dry the floor before you start, and if the fault has already put water near the plug or the cord, isolate at the breaker rather than by pulling the plug out of a wet socket.

The line between a fix and a service call
Call when the next step would need a meter, and call earlier than that for three things: a breaker that will not stay in, a plug or cord warm to the touch, and oil at any joint in the tubing. Everything above those lines is owner work and most of it needs no tool at all, which is why the order puts it first.
