What is happening, in three sentences
An AVRA unit that makes no ice is usually short of water rather than short of cold. Supply valves left half open, a saddle valve that has silted up, and a fill tube frozen shut account for most of it, and all three are visible. A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (minus 18 °C) or below, and an ice maker needs the compartment near that to cycle at all.
What this looks like at the cabinet
- The mould holds water that never freezes solid — Water is arriving and the compartment is not cold enough to finish the job.
- The ice tastes or smells of the cabinet — Old ice in a bin absorbs odour; it is a housekeeping matter rather than a fault.
- There is no sound of a fill at any point in the day — A fill is audible; its absence over a full day means water is not being called for or not arriving.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet has no factory ice maker — Not every model under this stem is fitted with one. If there is no mould and no arm inside the freezer section, there is nothing here to repair.
Causes, most likely first on AVRA models
- Bin jammed, or the arm held up by the ice already in it — The arm stops production when the bin is full, and a bridged clump of old ice holds it up while the bin is half empty. First on this family because it needs nothing taken apart — on a cabinet this size it is a look and a listen, and excluding it costs less than five minutes.
- The cabinet is not fitted with an ice maker, or its switch is off — Across a stem this wide the fitting is not uniform, and an arm resting in its raised position or a switch left off produces exactly the same complaint as a broken machine. Second on this family: it produces the same complaint as the cause above it, so the two have to be separated before either is acted on.
- Fill valve or its inlet screen blocked — The inlet screen catches grit from the supply and is a common restriction; the valve itself is electrically opened and can fail closed. Third on AVRA: it is still something you can see rather than measure, but it takes the cabinet emptied or moved and the two above it do not.
The diagnostic order
- Where to begin on this model group — Two of the causes above are not faults at all, and both are excluded from the doorway of the freezer section. They come first for that reason.
- Empty the bin completely and break up any bridged ice — Then let the arm fall and give the machine a few hours before judging it.
- Look inside the freezer section for the mould and the arm — No mould means nothing to fix. An arm in the raised position, or a switch at off, means nothing broken.
- Judge the fill by the cubes it makes — Hollow or half-height cubes mean water is arriving but not enough of it, which points at the screen before the valve.

Where the owner fix stops
Call once the owner-side checks above are clean and the cabinet is still wrong. Call without finishing the list if the fault is on the sealed system — if you can see oil at the compressor or at a tubing joint, or you smell burning — because oil outside the tubing means the system is open, and every hour the unit runs after that costs more to put right.
