The short answer
Water around an AVFF cabinet almost always started as condensate the machine made on purpose and then failed to route away, not as a burst pipe. On a frost-free compact refrigerator the route is short and the places it can fail are few, which makes this one of the better faults to diagnose at home.
What you observe on these models
- Water or a sheet of ice under the crisper — The defrost drain has backed up, frozen, and then found another way out.
- Water behind the cabinet rather than inside it — That separates a plumbing fault at the valve from a drain fault inside.
- Water on the floor of the refrigerator compartment with ice above it — The meltwater is made upstairs and has to pass downstairs to leave.
- NEAR MISS — water only after the door has been left open a long time — That is the cabinet catching up with the room, not a leak.
Causes, most likely first on the AVFF family
- A frozen or blocked defrost drain — First on this platform: the defrost cycle makes water on purpose and expects it to leave through one small tube; when that tube ices at its outlet the water backs up, freezes into a sheet under the compartment floor, and then finds its way forward.
- The drain pan over the compressor cracked or overfull — Second: the pan is supposed to evaporate that water; in a humid room, or with the pan sitting off its lugs after a move, it does not.
- A shelf or drawer diverting water off its intended path — Third: water inside a cabinet follows mouldings and channels.
- Something spilled and frozen inside — Fourth: a spill that freezes into the channel blocks it as effectively as debris, and it melts on the same schedule as everything else.
- The cabinet has been moved recently — Last: moving disturbs levelling, the drip tray and the drain hose in one action, and a leak that starts the week after a move is usually one of those three.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Look under the crisper and at the floor of the fresh-food compartment — Water or a sheet of ice there is the defrost drain, and it is the first thing to check on a frost-free cabinet.
- Clear the drain outlet and flush the tube with warm water — Warm water melts the plug that a wire would only push further in.
- Pull the cabinet and inspect the drain pan over the compressor — Cracked or displaced pans leak in exactly the same place every time.
- Level the cabinet — The drain relies on it entirely.
- Where the cabinet is plumbed, dry the inlet valve and check it again later — A valve that weeps leaves its water at the back, which separates it from every cause above.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. On this platform there is no check worth doing that cannot wait the thirty seconds it takes to isolate the machine properly.

When to call a technician
Clearing a drain, levelling a cabinet and replacing a gasket are all owner jobs on a frost-free compact refrigerator. On these models the line falls at anything behind a panel and anything on the sealed system. Call without working through anything at all for frost or ice returning within days of being cleared, together with a cabinet that will not hold.
