The short answer
Water around an AV cabinet almost always started as condensate the machine made on purpose and then failed to route away, not as a burst pipe. On a two-door refrigerator-freezer the route is short and the places it can fail are few, which makes this one of the better faults to diagnose at home.
What you observe on these models
- Water on the floor of the refrigerator compartment with ice above it — The meltwater is made upstairs and has to pass downstairs to leave.
- Water under the drawers before any reaches the floor — That is the drain, and almost nothing else.
- A trickle that always follows the same line on the floor — Repeatable paths name the source.
- The puddle appeared after the cabinet was moved — Levelling, tray or hose, in that order.
- NEAR MISS — water only after the door has been left open a long time — That is the cabinet catching up with the room, not a leak.
Causes, most likely first on the AV family
- Defrost water from the freezer compartment finding the wrong route — First on this platform: both compartments are served by one coil, so all of the water comes from one place and must travel past the refrigerator compartment to get out.
- Blocked drain channel or hole at the back wall — Second: it is the narrowest part of that route and it is the part that fills with debris.
- A shelf or drawer diverting water off its intended path — Third: water inside a cabinet follows mouldings and channels. A drawer sitting proud or a shelf refitted upside down sends it onto the floor instead of into the drain.
- Something spilled and frozen inside — Fourth: a spill that freezes into the channel blocks it as effectively as debris, and it melts on the same schedule as everything else.
- The cabinet has been moved recently — Last: moving disturbs levelling, the drip tray and the drain hose in one action, and a leak that starts the week after a move is usually one of those three.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Work out which compartment the water started in — On a shared-evaporator cabinet the water is made in the freezer and has to travel, so a wet refrigerator floor usually starts upstairs.
- Clear the drain channel and hole at the back wall — Warm water and patience.
- Defrost the cabinet fully before judging anything else — On a manual-defrost platform, a full defrost is a diagnostic step as much as a fix.
- Look under the crisper and at the floor of the fresh-food compartment — Water or a sheet of ice there is the defrost drain, and it is the first thing to check on a frost-free cabinet.
- Where the cabinet is plumbed, dry the inlet valve and check it again later — A valve that weeps leaves its water at the back, which separates it from every cause above.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do it before the first panel rather than before the difficult one: the live parts are not where most people expect them.

When to call a technician
Clearing a drain, levelling a cabinet and replacing a gasket are all owner jobs on a two-door refrigerator-freezer. On these models the line falls at the sealed system, which is licensed work from the first cut. Call without working through anything at all for a burning smell, a breaker that trips, or water reaching the machine compartment.
