The short answer
On the AV family this is far more often a heat-rejection or an air-path problem than a dead compressor, and the two-door refrigerator-freezer construction is why. One evaporator feeds both compartments, so which compartment is wrong tells you more than any measurement.
What you observe on these models
- One compartment is right and the other is not — On a shared-evaporator cabinet this is the single most useful observation available.
- The cabinet holds overnight and drifts through the day — That pattern is about the room and the door use rather than the machine.
- One shelf is noticeably colder than another — Uneven temperature is an airflow story; uniform warmth is not.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is silent and nothing is cold — That is a no-power, cold-control or start-relay fault and it belongs on a different page.
Causes, most likely first on the AV family
- Airflow through the vent between the two compartments — First on this platform: a vent blocked by a tall box, or a damper stuck shut, leaves the freezer right and the refrigerator warm, which is the single most common call on this platform.
- Ice building over the evaporator in the freezer compartment — Second: once the coil is under a rind of ice, both compartments suffer and the compressor runs without a break.
- Door gaskets, and the lower door in particular — Third: the lower door is opened most, carries the heaviest load in its shelves and is the first to stop pulling itself closed.
- Condenser coil, condenser fan and the space behind the cabinet — Fourth: this is a cabinet sold to live in tight spaces, and it is routinely installed in one.
- Cold control, start relay or the sealed system — Last: a cabinet that is uniformly, gently too warm is a control story; a cabinet that is not cold at all with a silent compressor is a relay or a sealed-system story.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Work out which compartment is wrong — This is the first move on a shared-evaporator cabinet and it decides everything after it: freezer fine and refrigerator warm is an airflow or damper story.
- Find the vent between the compartments and clear whatever is in front of it — Free, immediate, and it is the fix in a large share of calls on this platform.
- Look at the freezer evaporator area for a frost sheet — Once ice bridges the coil both compartments lose cold together.
- Clean the condenser, then take an overnight reading in both spaces — A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 °F (4 °C) or below.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do it before the first panel rather than before the difficult one: the live parts are not where most people expect them.

When to call a technician
The line on a two-door refrigerator-freezer is the rear panel and the sealed system. On these models the line falls at the sealed system, which is licensed work from the first cut. Call without working through anything at all for a burning smell, a breaker that trips, or water reaching the machine compartment.
