The short answer for ARF models
On the ARF line the ice maker needs three things and fails if any one is missing: water at the fill valve, a freezer cold enough to harvest, and a bail arm or sensor that is not telling it to stop. Test them in that order and most cases resolve without a panel coming off.
What it looks like from the outside
- The ice maker is silent and the arm is up — The bail arm in the raised position is the off switch, and it is knocked up more often than anyone admits.
- Water on the freezer floor under the ice maker — Overfill or a misaligned fill tube, and it will freeze into a sheet if left.
- The cubes have fused into one solid lump — Slow production, so each cube part-melts and refreezes onto the next.
- The bin is empty and the mould is dry — No water is arriving. The fault is upstream of the ice maker itself.
- NEAR MISS — the ice maker grinds and jams — A mechanical jam is a different repair from a supply fault and needs the module out.
What actually fails on these models, in order
- Bail arm or shut-off sensor in the off position — Ranked first because it costs nothing to check and because a bin being pulled in and out is exactly what knocks it up.
- Fill valve failed or its screen blocked — The valve has a fine screen on the inlet that catches scale, and a valve that buzzes without filling is the classic sign.
- Fill tube frozen — A partial fill that dribbles rather than shoots freezes in the tube and then blocks every fill after it.
- Ice maker module or thermostat failed — The module is the last suspect on this list, not the first, and it is a parts job rather than a check.
Working through it in order
- Where to begin — The order below follows the ranking rather than the machine: two of the four causes above cost nothing to rule out on ARF models, so they come first.
- Look at the bail arm or the sensor window first — Up is off. This single look resolves more stopped ice makers than every other check on this page combined.
- Check the filter date and change it if you cannot remember — Filters are the commonest restriction and the cheapest part on the machine.
- Look into the fill tube with a torch for a plug of ice — A frozen tube blocks every fill after the first partial one.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and accept that a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The second rule is about weight: a loaded refrigerator is far heavier than it looks and the doors come off in your hands if the hinge pins are removed carelessly. Empty it first and get a second person.

When to call a technician
Call a technician when the checks above have not changed anything, when the fault needs a meter on live terminals, or when the answer turns out to be the sealed system. Call the same day rather than waiting if there is a burning smell, if the cabinet or the plug is hot, or if the unit has tripped a breaker — those are electrical faults rather than cooling ones and they do not improve with time.
