The short answer for ARF models
An Avanti ARF refrigerator that runs but will not get cold is usually an airflow fault rather than a dead compressor: the evaporator ices over, the fan can no longer push cold air into the cabinet, and the food compartment warms while the machine sounds perfectly healthy. Two of the three likely causes can be checked without tools.
What you actually observe
- The back of the cabinet is hot to the touch — A condenser that cannot shed heat, usually because it is under a blanket of dust.
- Warm air blowing from the fresh-food vents — The fan is running and what it is moving is not cold.
- A sheet of frost on the freezer rear wall — Not the usual light dusting but a solid layer over the vents.
- Food in the fresh-food drawers spoiling early — The drawers sit furthest from the vents and warm first.
- NEAR MISS — water is pooling under the drawers — That is a blocked defrost drain and the water-leak page covers it properly.
Likely causes on ARF, ordered
- Condenser coil blanketed in dust — Ranked first because it is the one cause that develops on every unit in every kitchen and the one owners never look at.
- Evaporator fan motor failed or obstructed — The fan sits behind the freezer rear panel. When it stops, cold is still being made and none of it moves, so the freezer stays cold and the fresh-food side does not.
- Overloaded cabinet blocking the vents — Boxes pushed against the rear vents stop the airflow as effectively as ice does, and it is free to fix.
- Door seal failing or a door left ajar — A seal that has taken a set no longer touches the cabinet all the way round, and the unit spends its life pulling down warm room air.
The order that saves the most time
- Where to begin — On ARF models, three of the four causes above are checkable without a panel coming off, and this order puts every one of them before anything that is not.
- Pull the unit out and look at the condenser coil — If you cannot see metal through the dust, you have found a cause whether or not it is the only one.
- Check the fresh-food vents are not blocked by food — Boxes against the rear vents stop airflow exactly as ice does.
- Listen at the freezer for the evaporator fan — It separates the two likeliest causes before any tool comes out, and it costs nothing.
The two rules that matter on this appliance
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and accept that a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The second rule is about weight: a loaded refrigerator is far heavier than it looks and the doors come off in your hands if the hinge pins are removed carelessly. Empty it first and get a second person.

When to call a technician
Call once the owner-side checks above are clean, and call immediately if the fault turns out to be on the sealed system: refrigerant work is licensed work and the tools for it are not owner tools. Call without finishing the list if you see oil at the compressor or smell burning, because oil outside the tubing means the system is open and every hour it runs after that costs more to put right.
