The short answer for AFD models
Water on the floor around an Avanti AFD refrigerator is usually a blocked defrost drain rather than a burst line: the drain tube behind the freezer wall silts up or freezes, the defrost melt has nowhere to go, and it finds its way out under the crisper drawers. It is a cheap fault and it is the first one to look for.
What the owner sees
- Water dripping from the dispenser after each use — A few drops are normal. A steady drip is a dispenser valve not seating.
- Ice building up behind the rear freezer panel — A drain that has frozen rather than silted, and it will keep refreezing until it is cleared.
- A sheet of ice on the freezer floor — Melt that refroze before it could reach the drain.
- Droplets running down the inside of the door liner — A seal that is no longer touching, so warm humid room air is condensing inside.
- NEAR MISS — the leak arrived with a new ice maker noise — That points at the fill valve and belongs on the ice-production page.
Likely causes on AFD, ordered
- Defrost drain tube blocked with debris — Ranked first because every unit of this type makes defrost melt and this is the only path it has.
- Ice maker fill tube misaligned — Water that misses the mould freezes on the freezer floor and melts out later as a puddle.
- Defrost drain frozen — Second and closely related: once a slow drain holds water through a cold cycle it freezes solid and then blocks every cycle after it.
- Door seal failing — Warm room air condensing inside the cabinet puts far more water in than most people expect, and the seal is checkable in a minute.
Working through it in order
- Where to begin — On AFD models, three of the four causes above are checkable without a panel coming off, and this order puts every one of them before anything that is not.
- Look for ice behind the rear freezer panel — Ice there rather than water means the drain has frozen rather than silted.
- Check the cabinet is level front to back — A unit tipped forward sends condensate the wrong way along its own channel.
- Run a sheet of paper round every door seal — Where the paper slides out freely, the seal is not touching and room air is getting in.
What to isolate before you start
Safety
Pull the plug or switch the breaker off before any panel is disturbed, and remember that a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut the water supply as well if the refrigerator has an ice maker or a dispenser, because that connection is at mains pressure and it is behind the cabinet where you will be working. Leave interlocks alone and leave the sealed system to a licensed technician.

When to call a technician
Call a technician when the checks above have not changed anything, when the fault needs a meter on live terminals, or when the answer turns out to be the sealed system. Call the same day rather than waiting if there is a burning smell, if the cabinet or the plug is hot, or if the unit has tripped a breaker — those are electrical faults rather than cooling ones and they do not improve with time.
