The short answer for AFD models
When an Avanti AFD refrigerator loses cooling but keeps running, start with the question of whether the freezer side is still cold. A cold freezer with a warm fresh-food compartment is an airflow or damper problem.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- Warm air blowing from the fresh-food vents — The fan is running and what it is moving is not cold.
- The back of the cabinet is hot to the touch — A condenser that cannot shed heat, usually because it is under a blanket of dust.
- The compressor never stops running — It runs without ever reaching temperature, which is the same fault seen from the other side.
- The cabinet is warm while the unit is clearly running — You can hear the compressor; the air inside is not cold and has not been for hours.
- NEAR MISS — water is pooling under the drawers — That is a blocked defrost drain and the water-leak page covers it properly.

- Where to begin — The order below follows the ranking rather than the machine: two of the four causes above cost nothing to rule out on AFD models, so they come first.
- Feel whether the condenser is hot or merely warm — A coil that is barely warm while the compressor runs is a coil not receiving heat, which changes the answer.
- Watch whether the compressor ever cycles off in a day — A unit that never stops is a unit that never reaches its setpoint.
- Look at the freezer rear wall for a frost sheet — Frost over the vents confirms the airflow cause when the fan is running.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and accept that a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The second rule is about weight: a loaded refrigerator is far heavier than it looks and the doors come off in your hands if the hinge pins are removed carelessly. When to call a technician
Call once the owner-side checks above are clean, and call immediately if the fault turns out to be on the sealed system: refrigerant work is licensed work and the tools for it are not owner tools. Call without finishing the list if you see oil at the compressor or smell burning, because oil outside the tubing means the system is open and every hour it runs after that costs more to put right.
