The short answer for AFD models
On the AFD line the ice maker needs three things and fails if any one is missing: water at the fill valve, a freezer cold enough to harvest, and a bail arm or sensor that is not telling it to stop. Test them in that order and most cases resolve without a panel coming off.
What the owner sees
- A buzz twice a day with no water arriving — The fill valve is being asked to open against a closed or blocked supply.
- Ice cubes are hollow or half-sized — A partial fill, which means restricted flow rather than no flow.
- The ice maker is silent and the arm is up — The bail arm in the raised position is the off switch, and it is knocked up more often than anyone admits.
- Water on the freezer floor under the ice maker — Overfill or a misaligned fill tube, and it will freeze into a sheet if left.
- NEAR MISS — the whole cabinet is warm — Then this is a cooling failure and the ice is only the first symptom you noticed.
Causes on AFD, most likely first
- Bail arm or shut-off sensor in the off position — Ranked first because it costs nothing to check and because a bin being pulled in and out is exactly what knocks it up.
- Freezer not cold enough to trigger harvest — The ice maker will not cycle until the mould reaches its harvest temperature, so a warm compartment stops production entirely.
- Ejector or motor jammed — A cube that has bridged the mould will stall the ejector, and the module stops until it is cleared.
- Door not closing fully — A door held ajar by a package warms the compartment enough to stop harvesting long before the food spoils.
What to look at first, second, third
- The order, and why it is this one — On AFD models, three of the four causes above are checkable without a panel coming off, and this order puts every one of them before anything that is not.
- Check the filter date and change it if you cannot remember — Filters are the commonest restriction and the cheapest part on the machine.
- Look at the bail arm or the sensor window first — Up is off. This single look resolves more stopped ice makers than every other check on this page combined.
- Put a thermometer in the freezer for an hour — A freezer holds food safely at zero degrees Fahrenheit or below, and an ice maker needs that cold to harvest.
Before you take any panel off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the compressor circuit on a refrigerator is live whenever the plug is in. Leave the door switch wired exactly as it is: it cuts power to the evaporator fan for a reason, and defeating it puts a moving blade behind a panel you are reaching past.

When to call a technician
Call once the owner-side checks above are clean, and call immediately if the fault turns out to be on the sealed system: refrigerant work is licensed work and the tools for it are not owner tools. Call without finishing the list if you see oil at the compressor or smell burning, because oil outside the tubing means the system is open and every hour it runs after that costs more to put right.
