The short answer for B models
An Avanti B microwave that will not start usually has something inhibiting it rather than something broken. The door latch not making, a child lock, a clock that was never set, or a demonstration mode left on from the shop floor account for most of these, and none of them needs a tool.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- The display is completely dead — No power at the oven, or its own supply has failed.
- The breaker trips when start is pressed — An electrical fault, and it takes priority over everything on this page.
- The display shows a clock prompt or a demonstration message — Some ovens will not cook until the clock is set or the demonstration mode is cleared.
- The display is lit but start does nothing — Power is fine and something is inhibiting the start.
- NEAR MISS — the breaker trips every time — Then this is an electrical fault and it is not a start fault at all.

- Door not latching fully — Ranked first because three interlocks sit behind the latch in series and any one of them stops the oven while the display looks normal.
- Power not reaching the oven — A tripped breaker or a socket that has worked loose behind the cabinet.

- Vents blocked on a built-in installation — The owner-fixable cause of the thermal protector operating.
The order that saves the most time
- Before anything else — Work down this list rather than starting where the fault seems loudest.
- Look at the display before pressing anything — Dead, lit, locked or prompting are four different faults and the display distinguishes them for free.
- Check whether the clock is set or a demonstration message is shown — Both stop some ovens from cooking and both take seconds to clear.
- Try several different buttons on the panel — Some responding and others not points at the membrane rather than at the control.
Why the case stays on
Safety
Switch the oven off at the socket and unplug it. On a microwave the high-voltage section holds a charge in its capacitor after the power is off, and that charge is lethal. There is no owner-serviceable part inside the case and no safe way to establish that the capacitor has discharged without the right tool. Clean the cavity and the door seal face; leave everything else alone, and never run the oven with a door that does not latch.

When to call a technician
Call for anything that is not cleaning. The high-voltage capacitor inside can hold a lethal charge after the oven is unplugged, so there is no owner repair on this appliance beyond the cavity, the turntable and the door seal face. Stop using the oven entirely — not just for cooking, but at all — if the door is damaged, if it runs with the door ajar, or if it arcs at the frame.
