The short answer
Most VFR noise complaints are a healthy machine amplified by what it is standing on or touching, or something loose inside the box. An upright has a thin liner, light contents and a tall cabinet, which is a recipe for rattle. The few noises that do matter have a signature, and the checks below separate them in about ten minutes. There is one number under the VFR label in the table below, so nothing here depends on which variant you own.
What you observe on these models
- A rattle that moves when the baskets are rearranged — Contents against a thin liner.
- A drone that changes when you put a hand on the cabinet side — Panel resonance, and the hand test proves it instantly.
- A tick or creak as the lid is closed and as the cabinet cycles — Hinge springs and lid contact, not the machine.
- A noise that stops when either door is opened — The door switches cut the shared fan.
- NEAR MISS — a loud buzz arriving with a cabinet that has stopped freezing — That is a starting fault; read the cooling page for this family first.
Causes, most likely first on the VFR family
- Baskets, shelves and packaging vibrating against the liner — First on an upright, because the liner is thin and everything inside is touching it.
- The cabinet rocking on an uneven floor — Second: a tall cabinet on three feet announces every compressor start.
- A change in the room rather than in the machine — Third: a garage cleared out, a new hard floor, or a quieter house makes an unchanged freezer sound like a new fault.
- Tubing contact in the machine compartment at the back — Fourth: lift it clear by hand and the noise goes with it.
- Start relay and compressor start attempts — Last: click, buzz, silence, repeating.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Empty one basket at a time and listen after each — It finds the rattle faster than any inspection.
- Rock the cabinet gently by a top corner — If it moves, the feet are not carrying it and every start will be heard.
- Pull the cabinet and check the condenser fan and the tubing — Same compartment, both easy to see.
- Take everything off the top and away from the sides — The cheapest test available and it resolves a large share of complaints.
- Pull the cabinet and lift suspect tubing clear by hand — Contact noise stops the instant the tube is lifted.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Treat that as the first step of every check below that involves a panel, a grille or a cover. The compressor start circuit and the condenser fan are live whenever the cabinet is powered, and they start without warning. The sealed refrigerant circuit is not owner work at any point, and a loaded cabinet is a two-person lift rather than a one-person effort. Work with good light and with the appliance far enough out that you are not reaching past anything live.

When to call a technician
Anything you can silence from outside the cabinet is yours: moving it off a wall, unloading a basket, levelling a foot, lifting a tube clear. On these models the line falls at the sealed refrigerant circuit and the compressor. Call without working through anything at all for a cabinet that has stopped holding despite a clean seal and a clear frost line.
