The short answer for CF models
A leaking CF freezer sorts by timing. Water that appears within a day of a manual defrost is melt that missed the channel. Water that appears on no particular schedule points at a seal admitting humid room air, which then condenses and runs.
What the owner sees
- Water inside the compartment under the baskets — Melt that has not reached the drain hole and has pooled in the bottom of the liner.
- Ice building at the drain hole itself — A drain that has frozen rather than silted, and it will refreeze until it is cleared.
- Wet floor under the back of the cabinet — The drain pan, which on most designs sits over the compressor at the rear.
- A sheet of ice on the compartment floor — The same melt, refrozen before it could get away, and it will keep building.
- NEAR MISS — the water is warm or soapy — Look at what else is plumbed nearby before blaming the freezer.
What actually fails on these models, in order
- Drain channel or hole blocked — Ranked first because it is the only path the melt has and because packaging fragments end up in it on every model.
- Drain frozen — Second: once a slow drain holds water through a cold cycle it freezes solid and blocks every cycle afterwards.
- Defrost drain hose kinked behind the cabinet — Pinched when the unit was last pushed back, and invisible from the front.
- Cabinet out of level — A unit tipped forward sends the melt the wrong way along its own channel and out at the front.
The order that saves the most time
- Where to begin — The order below follows the ranking rather than the machine: three of the four causes above cost nothing to rule out on CF models, so they come first.
- Check the cabinet is level, slightly low at the back — That is the attitude the drain channel is designed around.
- Pour a little warm water into the drain and see whether it runs away — Backing up is conclusive; running away and reaching the pan is equally conclusive the other way.
- Look for the drain hole in the compartment floor and check it is clear — On most designs it is a small opening at the lowest point, and it is the first thing to inspect.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the start relay on a freezer sits directly on the compressor terminals. Do not chip ice off an evaporator with anything metal: puncturing a coil ends the life of the appliance in one stroke and releases refrigerant into the room.

When to call a technician
The line on this class is the base panel. Dust, seals, frost, levelling and loading are yours; the thermostat, the relay, the fan and the sealed system are not. Call the same day if the unit has tripped a breaker or smells hot, and move the load before you call rather than after.
