The short answer for CF models
An Avanti CF freezer that is warming should be emptied to a cooler before it is diagnosed, not after. A freezer holds food safely at zero degrees Fahrenheit or below, and the checks below take hours rather than minutes to give an answer.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- A heavy frost layer over the walls or the coil — On manual-defrost models this is normal until it is thick, then it becomes the fault itself.
- Food surfaces soft while the unit runs continuously — The system is running and not reaching temperature, which is the definition of this fault.
- A new noise arriving with the warming — A fan or a compressor that is struggling, and it changes the ranking below.
- Temperature recovers overnight then drifts up by day — A unit that cannot keep up when the room is warm or the door is being used.
- NEAR MISS — only a small part of the load thawed — Check whether the lid was left ajar before assuming a fault at all.
What actually fails on these models, in order
- Condenser blanketed in dust — Ranked first on this class because the condenser is at floor level, unseen for years, and this is the only maintenance the appliance asks for.
- Thermostat or control sensor reading wrong — The unit believes it has reached temperature and stops calling for cooling, which looks like a capacity fault.
- Condenser fan stalled — On fan-cooled models the fan is what makes the condenser work; without it, capacity falls away.
- Overloaded compartment blocking airflow — On fan-cooled models, packing to the roof stops circulation as effectively as ice does.
Working through it in order
- Start with what the ranking makes most likely — The order below follows the ranking rather than the machine: two of the four causes above cost nothing to rule out on CF models, so they come first.
- Put a thermometer in the middle of the load for an hour — A freezer holds food safely at zero degrees Fahrenheit or below.
- Look at the load height against the rim or the vents — Packing above the rim of a chest freezer holds the lid open a few millimetres, which is enough.
- Close the lid or door on a sheet of paper at several points — Where it pulls out freely the seal is not touching, and the hinge end is where it usually fails.
Power, weight and ice — in that order
Safety
Switch the breaker off or pull the plug first; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A loaded freezer is extremely heavy, so empty it before you move it and get help rather than dragging it across a floor. Never use a screwdriver or a chisel on frost: the evaporator is thin-walled and a puncture is not repairable.

When to call a technician
Call when the condenser is clean, the seal is proved and a full defrost has not restored temperature. That combination has eliminated everything an owner can reach, and what remains is behind the base panel or in the sealed system.
