The short answer for AV models
On an Avanti AV freezer there is no mains water connection on most models, which is useful: it means a leak can only ever release what the cabinet itself has condensed or melted. The urgency is about the floor, not about a flood.
What you actually observe
- Ice building at the drain hole itself — A drain that has frozen rather than silted, and it will refreeze until it is cleared.
- Water inside the compartment under the baskets — Melt that has not reached the drain hole and has pooled in the bottom of the liner.
- Damp around the door or lid frame — Warm room air condensing where the seal is no longer touching.
- Water arriving only in warm weather — More humidity means more condensate than the drain path can handle.
- NEAR MISS — water appears only when the lid is opened — Condensation on the lid underside dripping off, which is normal in a humid room.
Causes on AV, most likely first
- Drain channel or hole blocked — Ranked first because it is the only path the melt has and because packaging fragments end up in it on every model.
- Drain pan dislodged or cracked — The pan is knocked out of place whenever the unit is moved, which is usually when the leak starts.
- Door or lid hinge dropped — A lid that no longer sits square holds one end of the seal open permanently.
- Lid or door seal not touching — Room air condensing inside puts far more water into the cabinet than most owners expect.
- Frost build-up melting at the edges — Where the frost layer is thick, its edges melt each time the lid opens and the water runs.
Working through it in order
- Where to begin — The order below follows the ranking rather than the machine: four of the five causes above cost nothing to rule out on AV models, so they come first.
- Mop the water and watch where it returns — Front, back or inside tells you which third of this list to read, and nothing else does.
- Pull the unit out and look at the drain pan — Damp is right; full, cracked or out of its seat is not.
- Pour a little warm water into the drain and see whether it runs away — Backing up is conclusive; running away and reaching the pan is equally conclusive the other way.
The rules for working on a freezer
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and treat every capacitor as charged. On a freezer the specific hazard is the temptation to speed a defrost up: hot air from an unattended heater, a blade against the coil or a hammer against ice all end in a punctured evaporator. Warm water, a cloth and time are the only safe tools for that job.

When to call a technician
Call a technician once the owner checks are clean, or immediately if the compressor is running continuously without the cabinet getting cold. That state wears the compressor while it fails to help, so there is nothing gained by waiting.
