The short answer
A SGD dryer that stops early, stops and restarts, or never seems to finish is usually being told to stop by something other than a fault. A burner that lights and dies repeatedly is the distinctive cycle fault of a gas machine. The pattern of the stopping is the diagnosis, so note it before you change anything. There is one number under the SGD label in the table below, so nothing here depends on which variant you own.
What you observe on these models
- Heat comes and goes through the cycle — A burner lighting and dropping out.
- Cycles have got shorter since the machine was installed — A long closet duct run behind it.
- It stops mid-cycle and resumes later — Overheat protection cycling.
- The cycle ends within minutes of starting — Sensor bars reading dry, almost always.
- NEAR MISS — every cycle runs full length with no heat — That is a heat fault, not a cycle fault.
Causes, most likely first on the SGD family
- The burner lighting and going out repeatedly — First on a gas machine, and it is the distinctive gas cycle fault: the drum keeps turning, the heat comes and goes, and the cycle ends damp.
- Vent restriction — Second: a gas dryer suffers more from a poor duct than an electric one because it moves more air.
- An interrupted cycle being restarted mid-way — Third: opening the door mid-cycle resets timings on many machines, so a load that is opened repeatedly never completes the programme it started.
- A timed cycle being used where a sensing one was expected — Fourth: timed programmes run for their time whatever the clothes are doing, and a short time with a heavy load is not a fault.
- Restricted airflow raising the temperature early — Last: the machine reaches its cut-out point sooner than it should, ends the programme and reports nothing, which is the commonest cause of all.

- Watch a heated cycle start and listen for the burner — A burner that lights and dies repeatedly is the distinctive gas cycle fault.
- Inspect the duct run — A gas machine suffers sooner from a restriction.
- Note whether the machine stops and restarts after cooling — Protection device rather than control.
- Inspect the full duct run above and behind the machine — Stacked runs climb and bend, which is exactly what shortens cycles.
- Stop and call for anything at the burner — Valve, sensor and flue are technician components.

If you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel.

When to call a technician
Cleaning sensor bars, clearing a duct, changing load size and reading the cycle you actually selected are all owner work on a stacked gas laundry centre dryer. On these models the line falls at the heating circuit and the protection devices in it. Call without working through anything at all for a motor that hums without turning, which should be switched off rather than retried.
