The short answer
A SED dryer that is completely dead is usually unpowered, unlatched or protected rather than broken. On a laundry centre the supply serves both machines, so the breaker is the first thing to read. Work from the supply inwards and four of the five causes need no tools. There is one number under the SED label in the table below, so nothing here depends on which variant you own.
What you observe on these models
- Both machines dead — The supply, not the dryer.
- Dryer dead, washer working — Half the supply, a fuse, or the door switch.
- No response of any kind to the start button — Supply, latch and lock in that order.
- It hums but nothing turns — That is a motor or belt fault rather than a supply fault.
- NEAR MISS — it runs but does not heat — Read the heat page for this family instead.
Causes, most likely first on the SED family
- The breaker, including a single tripped leg — First on this platform: a dryer that is completely dead usually has no supply at all; one that tumbles without heat has half of it.
- Door latch and door switch — Second: the catch has to operate a switch, not merely hold the door. A door that needs a firm push before the machine responds has told you which it is doing.
- Start switch, timer or control board — Third, behind a panel on a machine mounted above a washer.
- Power at the socket or the spur feeding it — Fourth: a compact installed in a cabinet is usually fed from a socket you cannot see.
- A start button that needs holding rather than tapping — Last: several machines want the button held for a moment, and a light tap does nothing at all. It costs nothing to rule out and it explains a surprising number of dead dryers.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Cycle the breaker fully off and on — Completely dead means no supply; tumbling without heat means half of it.
- Close the door firmly — At head height it is easy to leave resting.
- Prove the socket or spur that feeds it — A cabinet installation hides the supply.
- Close the door and listen for the catch — Heavy doors, worn catches.
- Recall whether drying had been getting slower — That history points at a thermal fuse.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Isolating at the breaker is better than pulling the plug where the socket is behind the appliance, because it removes the temptation to work one-handed.

When to call a technician
Sockets, breakers, doors, locks and cycle selection are yours on a stacked electric laundry centre dryer. On these models the line falls at the drum supports, the belt and the motor. Call without working through anything at all for a burning smell, a cabinet that is hot to the touch, or a machine that trips its breaker.
