The short answer
A SED dryer that stops early, stops and restarts, or never seems to finish is usually being told to stop by something other than a fault. Stacked installations give the longest and most bent duct runs of any dryer. The pattern of the stopping is the diagnosis, so note it before you change anything. There is one number under the SED label in the table below, so nothing here depends on which variant you own.
What you observe on these models
- Cycles have got shorter since the machine was installed — A long closet duct run behind it.
- It runs longer than it used to for the same load — Airflow, and the fix is the duct rather than the control.
- It stops mid-cycle and resumes later — Overheat protection cycling.
- The cycle time shown does not match what actually happens — Sensing cycles estimate and adjust, and a coated sensor makes the estimate nonsense.
- NEAR MISS — every cycle runs full length with no heat — That is a heat fault, not a cycle fault.
Causes, most likely first on the SED family
- A long vent run cycling the machine early — First on a stacked installation, where the duct usually climbs and bends more than on any free-standing machine.
- Moisture sensor bars — Second: film from softener sheets is the usual culprit and it is free to clean.
- Load size against a small drum — Third: laundry-centre drums are smaller than they look and they are routinely overfilled.
- High-limit cut-out cycling — Fourth: a stop-and-restart pattern is a heat protection device, not a control fault.
- Timer or control board — Last: rarest of the five and the most expensive, which is exactly why it is checked after everything that is free.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Inspect the full duct run above and behind the machine — Stacked runs climb and bend, which is exactly what shortens cycles.
- Clean the sensor bars — Free.
- Dry a single fabric type rather than a mixed load — Towels and shirts in one drum finish at very different times.
- Use a timed cycle once, as a control — It removes the sensing system from the question entirely.
- Stop opening the door mid-cycle — It resets the timing on many machines.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Isolating at the breaker is better than pulling the plug where the socket is behind the appliance, because it removes the temptation to work one-handed. Never vent a dryer indoors, and never run it with the duct disconnected for longer than a brief diagnostic test. The element circuit and the motor are live whenever the machine is powered, and on a machine fed by two legs one of them can remain live with the other dead. Move a heavy appliance with two people rather than one, and plan where it is going before you start.

When to call a technician
Cleaning sensor bars, clearing a duct, changing load size and reading the cycle you actually selected are all owner work on a stacked electric laundry centre dryer. On these models the line falls at the drum supports, the belt and the motor. Call without working through anything at all for a burning smell, a cabinet that is hot to the touch, or a machine that trips its breaker.
