The short answer for DW models
On the DW line the commonest reason a machine will not start is the door not latching fully. The latch has to make a switch before anything else happens, and a rack pushed slightly proud or a seal that has swollen is enough to stop it.
What the owner sees
- A beep when start is pressed and nothing further — The machine has acknowledged the press and is refusing for a reason it may be showing.
- The panel lights up but the start button does nothing — Power is fine; the machine is being stopped by a latch, a lock or a setting.
- The panel is completely dead — No power reaching the machine, or its own supply has failed.
- It starts once from cold and never again the same day — A thermal cut-out or a marginal connection that opens when warm.
- NEAR MISS — it starts and then stops with water in the bottom — That is a drain fault and belongs on the drainage page.
Causes on DW, most likely first
- Door not latching fully — Ranked first because the latch operates a switch that gates everything else, and a rack pushed proud is enough to stop it making.
- Delay start set unintentionally — A flat touch panel makes this easy, and the machine is simply waiting.
- Water supply valve closed — Many machines start the cycle and then stall waiting for a fill that cannot happen.
- Control panel membrane failing — Some buttons respond and others do not, which is the tell.
Check in this order, and why
- Start with what the ranking makes most likely — The order below follows the ranking rather than the machine: three of the four causes above cost nothing to rule out on DW models, so they come first.
- Note whether it works from cold and fails later — That pattern points at a thermal cut-out rather than at a switch.
- Check the racks are pushed fully in — A rack proud by a few millimetres holds the door off its latch and is invisible with the door shut.
- Test the socket with something else, or check the breaker — If the circuit is dead the machine is not the fault yet.
Two isolations and one wait
Safety
Pull the plug or switch the breaker off, close the supply valve, and then wait for the machine to cool. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the sump element of a dishwasher stays hot long after the cycle ends. Wear a glove when clearing the sump: glass fragments end up there and cannot be seen in water.

When to call a technician
Call once the free checks are done and the fault stands: filter cleaned, spray arms cleared, hose proved, waste proved. Call immediately rather than finishing the list if the machine has tripped a breaker, if there is water reaching a socket, or if the leak is continuous with the machine switched off, because that last one is fed at mains pressure.
