The short answer for DW models
On the DW line the leaks worth separating are the ones that only happen during a cycle and the ones that happen at rest. A leak at rest is a supply connection or a fill valve, and it needs the tap closed now.
What you actually observe
- The machine stops mid-cycle with a fault after a leak — Many machines have a base tray float that shuts them down when it lifts.
- Suds on the floor as well as water — Too much detergent, or washing-up liquid put in by mistake, and the overflow is the symptom.
- A leak that continues when the machine is off — Mains pressure, which means the supply valve should be closed now.
- Water running down the front of the door — The door seal or the lower door gasket, which is the commonest leak on this class.
- A leak that started after the machine was moved — A hose disturbed or a connection loosened during the move.
- NEAR MISS — the floor is wet under the sink, not the machine — Check the sink trap and the supply tap before blaming the appliance.
The ranking for this family
- Door seal perished or displaced — Ranked first because the door is the only part of a dishwasher that opens, and its seal takes a set from thousands of cycles of heat.
- Supply hose connection loose — The one leak fed by mains pressure, and the reason the tap goes off first.
- Spray arm directing water at the door seal — Usually a loose or damaged arm, and it produces a leak only on certain cycles.
- Drain hose connection loose — Leaks only at the drain step, which is why it is so often missed.
- Tub seam or base tray cracked — Rare, and the one cause on this list that generally means replacing the machine.
The order that saves the most time
- Start with what the ranking makes most likely — On DW models, three of the five causes above are checkable without a panel coming off, and this order puts every one of them before anything that is not.
- Check what detergent went in — Washing-up liquid in the dispenser produces suds that leave through the door, and it looks exactly like a seal fault.
- Run a finger round the whole door seal for debris and hard spots — Both hold the seal open and both are free to fix.
- Dry everything, put paper down and run a short cycle while watching — It is the only way to see where water actually starts rather than where it arrives.

Safety
Switch off the breaker or pull the plug, and close the supply valve, before any panel comes off a dishwasher. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and this appliance puts live terminals and pressurised water within a hand of each other under the tub. The heating element in the sump stays hot well after a cycle ends, so give it time before you reach in.

When to call a technician
Call once the free checks are done and the fault stands: filter cleaned, spray arms cleared, hose proved, waste proved. Call immediately rather than finishing the list if the machine has tripped a breaker, if there is water reaching a socket, or if the leak is continuous with the machine switched off, because that last one is fed at mains pressure.
